    Ian,

1 "why does it automatically open with a blank document"
I cannot remember what controls that.
Unless you are starting Word with a /n or /w switch in its shortcut [but you would have had to have added that deliberately so I think you'd remember].

Example [from Word 2007] - Word not responding-word-some-cmd-line-switches.png

2 I should also have suggested checking Word, Options, Save because it also contains file location data.

So what caused the corrupt files that SFC found (and fixed).
Note that SFC will almost always find and fix corrupt files, especially on a system that is old (ex. not fresh installed)

If I would be having this problem my next step would be to uninstall office, reboot and then clean install it again.
And if that wouldn't work I would reset or clean install OS.

Zebal - you mean the nuclear option! Getting close.

I thought the repair option I ran on Word did that - reinstall all Word system files. If it was due to shared files with other Office options I would expect they too would be affected.

Dennis - as you assumed, I am not using any switches for Word.
I have tried saving documents, including this default Document1,and checking all settings for file locations, including forcing some to re-save to no avail.

Ok, one another idea poped into my mind.

There must exists logs or events related to office, take a look into the following directory:
    %temp%\Diagnostics\UploadCache

Are there any logs related to word?
if yes, zip them and share here.

    Ian,

I don't know if the Event logs contain anything that will help you. I suspect not.
You can find the Office logs in:
    Event Viewer,
    Applications & services log,
    Microsoft Office sessions.
    Word not responding-ev-applications-n-services-log-microsoft-office-sessions.png

Mine has a whole bunch of EventID 7000 [which means nothing to write home about] and one EventID 7003 when Outlook/Windows crashed.

You could look in the Microsoft Office diagnostics log one line above that as well but I couldn't see anything encouraging there either.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

In addition to above post, share application logs...

Follow steps below to share event logs:

    1. Right click on Windows button and click on "Windows PowerShell (Admin)"
    2. If prompted for password, enter administrator password and click "Yes" to continue

    3. Copy all of the code below at once, right click into console to paste and press enter
    Code:
    ni -ItemType Directory $env:SystemDrive\PSLogs | Out-Null
Get-EventLog -LogName Application -EntryType Error, Warning |
select EventID, TimeGenerated, Source, Message | sort TimeGenerated -Descending |
    fl > $env:SystemDrive\PSLogs\application.log
    Compress-Archive -Force -Path $env:SystemDrive\PSLogs -DestinationPath $env:SystemDrive\PSLogs.zip
    4. In your C:\ drive you'll find a PSLogs.zip file, attach it to your new reply.

Couldn't find any logs using %temp%\Diagnostics\UploadCache nor any permutation of that.
Either I'm doing something wrong or there aren't any. Couldn't find any on my PC either and I have seen the occasional upload on that.

Posts crossed. Will try your latest suggestions.

    Zebal - File attached
From what I make of this it seems only those attempts where I cancelled, because it was taking such a long time to load, have registered. If I left if for a couple of minutes and it started working, then it doesn't register on log. Which makes sense. Unfortunately doesn't say why it is taking so long.

You're right, the logs aren't much useful, but I suspect either GPU driver, display settings or antivirus.
    What antivirus are you using?

Please follow steps below to share DirectX diagnostic log:

    1. Press: Windows key + R
    2. Type into run box: dxdiag
    3. Click OK
    4. If asked to check for driver signatures click "YES"
    5. Wait until progress bar is complete
    6. Click on "Save All Information..." button
    7. Save the file to your desktop
    8. Zip up the file and attach to your reply
