Actually, MS Office Professional Plus is activated with a Retail Key. However, it is not a regular one but something special.

Computer professionals can buy subscriptions from Microsoft that allows them to evaluate and test software as part of their job. Naturally, to test retail software Microsoft supplies them with special retail keys. These keys differ from regular retail keys because one of these keys can probably activate maybe 100 or more copies of the software. It is important to understand that according to Microsoft licensing these keys are only supposed to be used by the developer with the subscription. They are not supposed to be given away or sold.

For example, suppose that developer gets one of these keys for MS Office Professional Plus. In his work he can activate a number of copies of it without problem. If he exceeds his set limit he can ask Microsoft to increase his limit.

As most of us know if you activate a copy of the retail product MS Office Professional you can't use the same key again for another copy of MS Office Professional. The MS activation servers will block that.

Now for the $10,000 question. If these special retail keys are only supposed to be used by approved professionals then how can they be offered for sale online?
