I have Office 2016 which I bought from the MS HUP through work. My employer switched to 365 last year removed 2016 and installed 365. The 365 interface is stripped down from 2016 and I have extra steps to login to Outlook. I’ll keep 2016 as long as it runs on my home computer. My work laptop I’m stuck with the approved IT solution.

Whilst I am not a fan of lease models, in the case of Office 365, MS have pitched the cost very low to make it attractive to all but those who use 1 version on 1 pc perhaps. When you factor in the Onedrive space, it can be even more attractive.

In the end, many users are jaundiced with the view that leasing is expensive. For Office 365 that is really only true if you have minimal user requirements and do not want/need to keep up to date.
In the end maybe you shouldn't assume it is an economic reason why some people prefer a perpetual version instead of a subscription version of Microsoft Office. Personally I limit my subscriptions for software because that is my choice. I use a local account on all my computers instead of Microsoft one. I have disabled One-Drive on all my computers. I have 2 copies of Office 2019 Professional Plus and 1 copy of Office 2021 Professional Plus. I have more than enough older copies of Office to cover my other computers. Some day I may switch to Microsoft 365 but not until I want to. Hopefully, that will before Microsoft forces me to make the change.

    I make no assumptions.

I was just outlining key facts so people who believe they are saving money can aid a user in making an informed judgement.

Part of that judgement process may well take other reasons into account e.g. you have already bought several licences, or just do not want a lease version.
