Cursor jumping in Word

When I enter text when editing or creating Word documents, the cursor keeps jumping haphazardly to different places in he document. It isnt always easy to see where the newly entered text is. (This is also happening now while I am trying to write this message).
Any suggestions what I can do to prevent this ?
