    System Properties Hyperlink in Word

    Hello all,

I regularly build some computers but I'm actually a bit lazy from all the clicking to the right locations. Now I take as an example the task (in all tasks) "Rename this computer". You can go through it fairly quickly via All tasks, but once you start writing down everything in Word about the settings of a computer. Why not via a Hyperlink in Word, directly to System Properties?

Is that possible and does anyone know how?

I want to use a fixed Word format and go through all the settings even faster via the hyperlinks.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

You can create shortcuts to a number of system properties windows. The executables for these live in the system32 folder, eg SystemPropertiesComputerName.exe

Then you just add a hyperlink to the shortcut, which can be anywhere you want to keep it. I have not looked for a way to suppress the Office safety warning.

I don't know if you can get at the 'modern' settings the same way. hth, Martin

Update: yes you can - see How to make shortcuts to Windows 10 settings on your Desktop | Computerworld
You have to follow the instructions exactly, and it seems that, once created, the target of the shortcut cannot be changed. It seems to create a .url, which (in my case) opens initially in Firefox, and one then has to allow it to access the settings app - and it leaves a tab open. Not very tidy!

update #2: A sc to explorer with the ms-settings parameter works directly, eg C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:easeofaccess-magnifier

    I think that's the one I'd use.

I keep my logs in Excel. Using Excel allows me to organise the data better than I could if it was in Word.

Shortcuts are awkward in Excel as well as in Word. Whilst they can both work easily with hyperlinks to internet addresses, they cannot do the same for shortcuts to onboard locations.
If I want to save a shortcut in my log I just write the path to its target [such as C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:easeofaccess-magnifier] and manually paste it into Run if I want to use it.
Alternatively, instead of writing in the shortcut, I just note that the required shortcut is in the relevant folder of my Taskbar Toolbar - see Taskbar Toolbars - Creating and naming, customising, moving [post #20] - TenForumsTutorials

    All the best,
    Denis

    Added later -
    - I was not able to get Martin's example [above] working in Word - C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:easeofaccess-magnifier
    - I was able to get Bree's example [below] to work in Word - C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesComputerName.exe

Hyperlink in Word seems to work.

They will get asked several times if they want to allow this to run though.

And you'll still have to tell them to click the Change button.

Thank you all. I'm going to have a go with this. I haven't had the time to try this out yet, but as you show it should work.
