Did the title bar confirm that you were working on normal.dotm?

The Ribbon setting is supposed to be global. If you set it to appear then it should do so for all Word documents.

Oh, no. I knew there had been visual changes but I did not think they affected displaying the filename in the title bar.

What about using the file menu then SaveAs / Save a copy [just to have a look, not to save anything so just escape afterwards]?
Does that offer the name as normal.dotm?
If not, does the File menu have a Properties entry that confirms the filename?

Your diagram shows only one page displayed.

    Normal. Not normal.dotm

The file menu then SaveAs / Save a copy shows template view as normal and opens the template folder

Perhaps the extension is in a separate filetypes entry below the filename entry?

I don't understand what you are saying here.

If it is normal.dotm, as seems likely, then I do not understand why your single page display is not sticking.

The added diagram confirms that it is your template called Normal.
The entry underneath confirms that its file extension is .dotm

You have file extensions hidden which is File explorer's default behaviour. That's why you only see the Normal bit instead of the full Normal.dotm.

    Jo,

I've been racking my brains about this but I still do not understand why fixing the template has not returned your other files to the view you want.

I hope that, at least, if you now create a new document, it is in Single page view.

I think that if you saved other files while they were in a multi-page view that that would have been saved as an override i.e. despite the template. So, to fix them, you'd have to go to each of the files you created before sorting out the template and fix them individually.

Set it back the way you want it.
Make a change, any change, even just adding a space at the end of a para is enough.
    Save the document.
And repeat this for all the affected files.

    All the best,
    Denis

You have referred to the entry in the Ribbon, View tab, Zoom section and that's what I have also been addressing. I know what James is referring to but it is not the same thing.

I suggest that the first thing you do is find the entry in Word Options to prompt before saving changes to your "Normal template". That is what I think has got you into this mess. For your Word 2019 this setting is at
    Word,
    Ribbon,
    File tab,
    Options,
    Advanced,
    subheading Save,
Prompt before saving Normal template - set this checkbox.
Now if Word thinks you really do want to change every document by changing the template upon which they are based then it will ask your permission first.

Your templates are, by default, in
    Code:
    C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
Copy that line so you can paste it instead of having to write it all out manually.

Using File explorer, click in a blank portion of its address bar then right-click, select Paste [or just use ctrl-v] to paste in the templates folder path I just gave you.
Look in that folder for Normal.dotm,
    then

I tried in my Office Pro 2007 install too, it works there.
