Just installed office 365 and have a few questions

I updated from office 2010 to office 365 about an hour ago. All went well and it works. Before I update all my other computers, I have two questions: in 2010 to exit word/excel (these are really the only programs I use in office), there was an "exit" choice in the file dropdown menu. I don't see this in 365. Do I just use the red X on the upper right? And how do I convert all my current 2010 word/excel files to 365? Do I need to use revo to completely uninstall office 2010 and all those files will automatically convert to office 365, or do I need to manually convert each file? win10 pro vers 21H2 Thanks.

What do you mean by converting your files to Office 365? Word still uses the .docx extention and Excel still uses the .xlsx extention.

Do you just mean that when you click on any file, it opens them automatically in Word 2010 versus the new Office 365 word?

As far as closing the apps go, I always do it by clicking on the X in upper right corner. You can click on File, Close. (Note: If you don't see close, you may have to extend out your window just a bit.

Office 2010 and office 365 are two distinct product, now you have both office installed at the same time.

Right click on a document, "open with", "Other Apps" select the new office application in the list, check "Always use this", Ok. this will create an association from the document to your new office application. Repeat for each wanted document type.

Or you can uninstall Office 2010, and do a 365 repair, this will revert all default office associations to the new installation.

Thank you for replying. Yes, when I click on any file, it opens them automatically in Word 2010 instead of the new Office 365 word? Same for the Excel files. The files that i have pinned and recent open in 365.

    Mark,

You don't. They are the same format.

Once you edit a file in 365 you might not be able to open it correctly in 2010 because 365 has additional capabilities and you might have inserted/altered something into a form that 2010 cannot understand.
    - The only example I have seen mentioned are graphical elements.
    - This really tripped me up when experimenting with Access 2016 but you shouldn't have any unsurmountable problems with Word or Excel.

If you don't have any particular need to use 2010 any more then by all means uninstall it. You can use Control panel, Programs & features or Settings, Apps for this.
Do consider keeping MS Office Picture manager 2010 if your uninstall procedure gives you the choice. There was no replacement.

    Merry Christmas,

Something not right with my desktop computer installation. Just installed office 365 onto my laptop that used the same office 2010 program and all the word and excel files updated to Office 365. Was there something I did or didn't do with my desktop computer that I did with my laptop that didn't change the 2010 files to 365? If I uninstall 365 and reinstall, would that count as another install against the 6 installs available to me? Only thing I remember is I picked the 64 bit install for my desktop, but at installation to use 32 bit, which I did. On the laptop, I installed using the default choice.

What exactly do you mean by that? Merely that your Word & Excel files open in Office 365?
    - If so & if you no longer want Office 2010 then just uninstall it.
    - If so but you want to keep Office 2010 then you'll have to change the file associations to whatever you do want. To avoid complicated instructions containing umpteen ifs, buts & maybes, please explain what you want in this respect.

When I go into file explorer on my desktop, all the word and excel files open in 2010 and have the 2010 icons next to them. On my laptop, all the word and excel files in explorer have the 365 style icons and open in 365. I'm asking how to have my desktop word and excels files be all 365 files not the 2010 files. When I did the 365 install on my desktop, I chose the 64 bit option (since I have win10 pro 64 bit, not knowing it was referring to the office version). It would not allow 64 bit install and gave me the option to do a 32 bit install which I did. When I did the install on my laptop, I chose the default installation option. Do I uninstall 365 and then re install 365 using default option?

It's not the files that have changed, it's their associations - they show the icon of their associated application, the application they open with.

If your OS is 64 bit then you can install 64 bit Office to gain a speed advantage that I have never seen quantified.
If your OS is 32 bit then you can only install 32 bit Office.

Do you want to keep Office 2010?

Only if I can not convert all the office 2010 files to office 365 files.
