Sign in issues with Word and Excel. Why not Outlook then?

    I know ... I know ...
On Internet this has been asked a trillion times already.
It is an ongoing issue for years and it is always up to the user to take action, repairing Office or doing other complicated things, that are sometimes beyond the skills of a simple end-user.
    (see: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/off...rom-office-365)

I shouldn't ask my wife to go thru such pages

    Anyway..
Occasionally I have (again) this "Account Error Sorry, we can't get to your account right now. To fix this, please sign in again." error. No problem, I just sign in and it is solved.

I am using Office 365 (subscription), Outlook Exchange on Windows 10 x64.

Am just curious to know why this is happening with Excel and Word only, but not with Outlook.

Doesn't Outlook not verify the Microsoft account the same way as Word/Excel?

    Thanks.

I'm currently running Office 365 and have never seen that issue.

That said, you could try doing a complete uninstall of Office by using this Microsoft App (SetupProd_OffScrub.exe). It can be downloaded from this Microsoft page Uninstall Office automatically. The app will remove all remnants of Office old and new. Been there, done that.

No guarantee it will solve your issue, but it's worth a try. Perhaps some old files are still in play?

I think there is a difference indeed.

Word, Excel (and other apps) are also connecting to Onedrive, and checking your account on office site. Outlook is only connecting to your account (mail)

As one who is currently running o365, I can say that would have nothing to do with account setting as this is an entire suit so it would be registered as one.

To be quite frank, the OP's issue is strange. It basically sounds like they have two office suites.

I've used Office365 for a couple of years and have never seen that error although a quick Google tour shows many similar issues going back many years.

Many of the online solutions direct you to uninstall, remove automatic sign-in to MS apps and add a dedicated ms account for each MS app. None of these solutions seemed to be a permanent fix.

Here's a posted remedy I haven't seen before (that is related) and might be worth the effort. It involves clearing the TPM settings.

If you decide to try out this fix, as always before performing system impacting tests, create a Windows restore point and OS image using Macrium Free or similar app.

Why would it indicates two Office suites?

I remember occasionally having that message myself. Usually didn't even sign in again, just wait a minute or two and restart Word. Could be any of servers along the way from me to MS servers.

Admit, there is one difference .. I have Office 365 Pro, linked to my business account. So, there is another level of servers in between me and MS.

One question for @tfwul : how many computers do you have with this Office license? including possible dual booting computers..

Seriously doubt the issue has to do with TPM. You don't even need TPM of any kind for Office. And yes, I'm also running Windows 11 RTM, with Office 365, so yes, TPM is enabled. But I also had it enabled on Windows 10, again, no issues.

I didn't say it was definite, I said "almost sounds like"

If the OP owns the entire suit, half shouldn't have account issues where the other half doesn't. Either the entire suite is activated, or none is. And when I mention activation, I'm also meaning sign in as well since sign in is predicated on activation.

Now if the OP is running say a suite which doesn't include Outlook, and later bought Outlook, that package would have to be activated independent of the other suite - thus that would be two different suites (Office apps/packages). And yes, you can/could buy Office without Outlook included.

With that, that begs the question... is the OP running two different suites?

    again, the OP said...

That sounds odd, and I was just trying to figure out why that "might" be.

At the end of the day, I don't know what the answer is other than to say, usually if there are sign in issues, a call to Microsoft can usually resolve the issue (as long as the software is legit).

BTW, I too have a business (school) 365 account as well (on my laptop) and still never seen that issue.

Really sorry for the delay. There were some other non-PC, rather time-consuming things that resulted in a sort of backlog.

Many thanks for all the replies here.

As for the 2 installations: I have 1 Office 365 subscription installed.

That said, when checking, I noticed an Office 2016 entry in the Start menu. Don't know what is though.
Office is installed on my laptop as well.

FWIW my Microsoft account (account.microsoft.com/?ref=MeControl) shows 4 devices, my (host)PC, laptop and 2 VM's
Office is -not- installed on/in the VM's, but they include OneDrive that automatically loads when booting a VM.
I do -not- save Office documents on OneDrive - all my files are saved within an encrypted drive on my system.
I mount that drive prior to launching anything else.

A few days back I did an Office repair because of some other reason, viz. an issue with spelling control of Outlook.
Not sure whether that will solve the matter.

Though peculiar and long lasting, this 'problem' is easily solved by a few clicks and signing in.
Guess I was signed out at some point then.

You look like you have two O-365 suites (English, and Dutch) installed according to your Programs and Features. Or are those language packs?

@sygnus21 that indeed is the English language pack for Office 365.
