Unable to save changes in office/file settings

When i make changes to advanced settings in word, ie recent files, measurements etc, they are not saved. I cannot see a button for this action.

This settings should be saved without clicking on any button.
Some settings are per template (styles, fonts etc.), and some per app.

Can you give us more details about what is going wrong?

Do you get any alert, like registry was protected or so? Maybe your antimalware settings.
    What AV do you use?

Fpund one other mention on web, to change regional settings to metric from US, or vice versa

I use Malwarebytes and MS security. I also do an offline scan with eset.
Have disabled both and tried again, still the same
    I have also reinstalled office
Think i may do a W11 upgrade to see if that makes any difference. Then i can roll back after

    Thanks for your time

Something is damaged in your installation. Could be registry, normal.dotm, or some add-in is interfering with your Office.

Check this document from Microsoft support:

    issues-when-start-or-use-word

    i would try with options3 and 4:

Delete the Word Data registry subkey

    Exit all Office programs.
Type regedit in the Search box (in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or Windows 8) or in the Start Search box on the Start menu (in earlier versions of Windows), and then press Enter.
Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are using.
    Table 2
    Word version Registry
    Word 2016 or later HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data
