Thanks, Denis, for going the extra mile (or should I say the extra four miles) and doing my homework for me. I greatly appreciate the help.

I was pleased to find that WPS Writer has an outline view, (though it does seem to lack the very handy drag-and-drop feature of the Word outline view). But I think I could soon get used to using it in spite of that shortcoming. Outline view is the only feature of MS Word that has kept me using it all these years. Now that I've found what appears to be an adequate, if not ideal, replacement for Word's outline view, I think I will probably stop using MS Word. (And I can always hope that the WPS Writer programmers could be persuaded to add drag-and-drop to their outline view).

Thanks again for taking the time to test those downloads. That would have been a grueling ordeal for me in my current poor state of health.

    Will,

And WPS is something that seems set to get updates for the foreseeable future.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Will,

I have now downloaded each of the four .exe files available.
    - I did not try the ones labelled Beta. Betas normally have expiration dates built into them so it would not be worth bothering.
    - The iso file link failed i.e. the link does not go to any file at all.

All my downloads failed my WinZip testing [components could not be extracted - indicating an internal file fault]
All my downloads failed to install. They generated a failure message within about a second of starting.

So I think you are left with Office 2003.

    Denis
I don't know what to say. As far as I can tell these files are good.
    Office 2010 (32-bit): X16-32007.exe
    Office 2010 (64-bit): X16-31970.exe, X17-75161.exe

I added ".zip" to each file name and opened them with WinRAR. Running test in WinRAR indicated each file had no errors.

Note that when I opened X17-75058.exe.zip WinRAR its test indicated this archive was bad.

The links that are broken started with "http://azcdn01.digitalrivercontent.net/". Digital River is where Microsoft used to outsource their software downloads. For some reason Microsoft shut down that site several years ago.

The only links that worked started with "http://web.archive.org". That means these files were archived in The Wayback Machine. In other words some files were archived in Wayback Machine website before Microsoft shut down the Digital River website.

    Ed,

I have clearly been experiencing a problem with downloading itself [rather than there being a fault in the source files] and I will have to look at that.
    - It has probably been a least a month since I have had to download anything bigger than 5MB.
    - I have never before seen a faulty download that believed that it had been successful [icon assigned, Unblock showing in its Properties].

I don't need Office 2010. I downloaded in order to be able to comment to Will about them.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Added the next day
    - I have just successfully downloaded a 942MB file so restarting my router etc might well have removed whatever my downloading problem was.
    - The new download was the 32 bit version from Ed's latest post. I won't be able to run my intended Office 2010 experiments though because it insists on being given a product key before it will install. [I had assumed that it would let me install then have a few uses of it before insisting.]

I'm disappointed in not being able to find a user support community on the web for WPS. So I may give one of those Word 2010 downloads a try after all.

A quick google around shows a fair bit of Support online, but is mostly on various Linux Forums rather than a specific application forum - this is I think to be expected as the Linux users are the targeted user base

These forums may be of use for general How To's on the application but not much help if you have an install or other OS issue

    Hi there

at the risk of using the dreaded "L" word again - yes WPS does work properly on that platform -- however I still prefer Office (any release) so after wasting a lot of time trying to get WINE to work -- a sort of application which can run Windows executables - I just went back to the whole hog and ran it on Windows VM's

    @Try3

Office 2010 provided you have a license (or can activate by phone) can be downloaded from various Internet archive sites -- choose carefully though as sometimes those sites contain pirated material so avoid any .zip, .rar etc file and just choose iso's only. The serial numbers are valid (you have to have a serial number to install office 2010 -- that's not the same as activation -- you get 30 days to activate the product) so you need to have either a valid activation code or do it by phone -- it's often automated where you enter a whole set of numbers.

This one appears quite legal as a repository source -- but do choose carefully as it does have some "dubious products" in it.

    Will,

Ed used several of those download links successfully. My only success was with the link he posted himself.

The download links are on the right, I've circled them.

I downloaded & started running the x86 =[32 bit] one but I'd say the chances are that the x64 [64 bit] link also works.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

I did perform a full test cycle on Office clones running natively in Linux and those ported for use in Windows ( Early days of Windows 10 ), over many months for a company who was looking at switching (obviously for a company the cost savings were a factor driving the potential change)

Basically I found that on both platforms the Clones worked excellently, producing good documents of a quality approaching those produced by Microsoft. The major issue was that when interacting with others who used the Original Microsoft products there were many minor differences in the final output which meant that work was required for tidying things up in transfers in both directions, ( I am talking here of mostly small layout issues that meant the the documents would not be identical when printed or otherwise "Published" to be honest there can be similar issues going between different versions of Microsoft Word but these are less often.

In the end the time and money lost for these corrections resulted in the change not being implemented

I myself used one of the clones on Linux several years ago for a year or more and had no issues with use so I would suggest it's fine for personal home use or even business where you do not interact with others for document production
