I've decided to throw in the towel on MS Word, and am going to take WPS Office for a test drive.
Try Ed's link first. It will get you what you wanted in the first place.

The old consensus was that it was always safer to use the "x86" [i.e. 32 bit] version because there was a better chance that any add-ins would work.
I suggest that if anybody with experience of 32 & 64 bit Office 2010 posts advice then you accept it but otherwise try the 32 bit version.
But download both x86 & x64 files while you have the chance. I'm amazed that their forum management have not deleted that post & I'm amazed that MS haven't forced them to.
I've downloaded them too. I want to do a x86 vs x64 Office comparison when I eventually find the time. The downloads are 15MB & 19MB so I'd guess that they are "online installers" that download the real installation files from MS servers and the only way to know if they still work will be to run them.

Added later - both my downloads failed as soon as I ran them.

I think that the fault is within the file structure in both cases.

    Ed,

If you are interested in testing the files that seemed OK, they are self-extracting archives so you can use a third-party zipping tool to 'Extract to here' [I use WinZip]
Both my downloads failed to extract and both reported
    Unable to extract file "AccLR.cab"

*** Those are the two I downloaded. There was no apparent problem with the download itself & I was able to right-click, Properties, Unblock as normal.

    All the best,

    Thanks, MisterEd,

When you wrote that the "files are OK", did you mean that you scanned them for malware?

What do you suppose the odds are that the Product Key from the OFFICE H&B 2010 REFURBISHER sticker on my PC will work with one of these files?

If you can get one that runs
and if the sub-headings / descriptions used by that user in the MSAForum are correct,
    then
it should allow you to choose Home & business during the installation and that should activate using your product key.

I scanned mine for malware. So mine are benign yet faulty.

Perhaps, if you have a fast internet connection, you could download each one and just try them all until you find one that works.

I've downloaded one of Ed's suggested files.

So now, I'm wondering if I should uninstall Word and Excel 2003 before attempting to install 2010.

Make a system image first so you can just revert to that if it goes wrong.

Do you already have a zipping utility [such as WinZip or 7z]?
    - They would provide you with an extra test you could do on he downloaded file before trying to run it.
    - I do not remember how Windows behaves without one of these facilities.
    - I have WinZip so I can right-click on the downloaded file & it gives me the option [in a WinZip group of the context menu] to "Extract to here". I don't think Windows on its own gave that option.

    Will,

I have now downloaded each of the four .exe files available.
    - I did not try the ones labelled Beta. Betas normally have expiration dates built into them so it would not be worth bothering.
    - The iso file link failed i.e. the link does not go to any file at all.

All my downloads failed my WinZip testing [components could not be extracted - indicating an internal file fault]
All my downloads failed to install. They generated a failure message within about a second of starting.

So I think you are left with Office 2003.

It is better if you uninstall Office 2003 first. You can always go back and reinstall it if you want.

Like I said X17-75058.exe was bad. It gave an error if I tried to run it. Note, I actually found this in my archive: X17-75058.exe 942 MB (987,942,848 bytes). This showed the file I downloaded yesterday was way too small.

The other three at least started OK. The caveat is I don't know what the difference is between them. If one doesn't work you might want to try another.

Here is an example of what you will see after the self-extracting file loads. Note each one of the three files I said were good started this way.

    Will,

Ed's experience is much better than mine. I never even reached that initial dialog he posted.

I still urge you to make a system image before you start.
