    Backup

Recently suffered a catastrophic invasion requiring Windows reset. Managed to restore from backup, but now Wondering if using both OneDrive and an external drive for backup makes sense?? Using Win 10 ver 1803

An external drive would be big enough for you to save "system images" on and you are unlikely to want to tie up your internet connection for long enough to use OneDrive for that.
Do you know about system imaging? If not, see my ditty - File backup vs imaging, imaging utilities, backing up drivers [post #3] - TenForums

I'd imagine that OneDrive would be perfectly alright for backing up your own files. But so is an external drive. If, like me, you want two copies of your file backups you could either use two external drives or one external drive plus OneDrive.

So, yes, using both OneDrive and an external drive for backup can make sense.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

OneDrive is possible but it has limited storage capacity unless you are paying for a storage plan and recovery from backup is dependent on your download speed. It's best to use an external drive.

It really depends on what you are backing up. For critical data, I backup to onedrive and external. For less critical data, external only.

    Hi folks
This will depend a lot on your Internet speed and the amount of Backup storage space you need. Uploading in a lot of places can be much slower than downloading. Storage plans on both OneDrive and Google Drive seem very reasonably priced if you don't go totally bonkers with requirements. I believe if you have Office/365 you get quite a chunk thrown in for one drive as part of the office/365 deal but for people without office/365 subscriptions I believe you can get around 1 TB storage for about 35 EUR a year if paid up front or 100GB for 2 EUR a month for Home users. Seems a good deal to me. Note max file size is 100GB on one drive plans whatever the storage limit you buy.

Remember though if it's an OS you need restoring you'll have to have some type of bootable OS that you can connect to the internet and retrieve your data.

UK prices : (Note UK prices include VAT)

OneDrive is good if you wish to only backup those folders which it offers but poor if you wish to choose your own specific folders & individual files.

    Hi there
Never had that trouble -- I could copy whatever folder(s) I liked to onedrive so long as no individual file was > 100GB and I was within the storage limit I'd paid for.

Not sure why you think there's problems with copying to onedrive.

Thanks for the link @cereberus. I still prefer Macrium as my main backup with File History as a file/folder backup option.
