    KB5005565 Excel/Word Crashing

    Hello,

I've noticed numerous users Excel/Word has started crashing or not opening at all after installing the update KB5005565. Has anyone else experienced this? We're on Windows 10 Education, most are 20H2. Windows version 1909.

Word crashes after applying MS update KB5005565

It's happened to my PC. Starting Word and opening a document triggers the wonderful "Microsoft Word has stopped working" message; the only option is to close the program. Excel seems to be OK. Quick Repair of MS Office does not fix Word. Microsoft, if you're listening, please fix this ASAP!

For both of you, which version of Office? I'm seeing no issue with both apps in Office 2013 on 2 Desktops.

Office 2016 for me. I uninstalled KB5005565, and Word works again. So this update is causing trouble.

I have been having freezing issues with Word 2019 for a long time. Since KB5005565 just came out on September 14 it couldn't be causing my problems.

No problem with Word/Excel on a Laptop running 2013. No problems on this Desktop running 2016, Build 14326.20404.

What Windows 10 ver/build are you running?
I'm on Office 2016 also and I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Ver. 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1165)

Windows 10 Home version 21H1, OS Build 19043.1237.
Microsoft forced KB5005565 as a stealth update back to my PC shortly after I uninstalled it. Strangely enough, Word is functioning normally after KB5005565 was installed the 2nd time. To reiterate:
    > First install of KB5005565 broke Word
    > Uninstall of KB5005565 fixed Word
    > Second install of KB5005565, Word is OK
Any chance that MS changed the KB5005565 binary between the first and second install?

Interesting to know. Though that may be a logical reason, I can't guess what happened; hopefully someone more knowledgeable can offer an opinion.
    Staying tuned.
