Don't merge lists in Word – is it possible to set as default?

    Hello,

It took me some time to find the name of that function in English.

I often have a multi-level list like the following. They are usually bullet lists, not numbered lists, but the list-styles are the real ones :
    1. This is style List1
1.1. This is style List 2
1.2. This is also style List 2
1.3. This is also style List 2
    2. This is style List 1
    3. This is style List 1

I often want to move item 1.2 between items 2 and 3. By default, Word reformats the paragraph as a "List 1" item and each time, I have to manually click on the icon "Do not merge lists" ("Ne pas fusionner la liste" in French). Unfortunately, I have not found a way to do it automatically, which means that cut and paste is almost always a 2-step process... and when I forget to do it on the spot, It requires even more work to reformat.

My question. Is there a way to have "Do not merge lists" as the default? Because that's what I want, like 99.99% of the time.

    Thank you.

    BTW, versions are current:
    – Windows 10, v.19043.1165 (in French)
    – Office 2016 ] v. 2107, build 1428.20250 (in French)

well, I don't (yet) know how to change your default, but I just copied (CTRL-C, CTRL-V) a level 2 item between two level one ones, and it came out as L2. RT-click and move did the same. Will look at options...

...well options>advanced>Smart cut and paste was set to 'merge pasted lists', but turning that off changed nothing. Will close doc, re-open and try again (Word 2010, btw, may be completely different)... No - it still retains list level.

What are you using to paste? Drag and drop maintains level, as i said above so does CTRL-C and CTRL-V, and cut, followed by paste (keep source formatting). I have to use cut -> paste (merge) to get anything to merge (adopt destination level). Sorry I can't help!

Thank you Mr Mngerhold. You seem to be in the same situation as I am. As I see I can include an image, I have illustrated what I want to do :
    Attachment 344058

I want to move the "List 5" item as shown above in one step. I know I can either cut and copy or drag it, then look at the small icon and click on "Do not merge lists". But I would like to find a configuration where this would be chosen by default. I am even open to registry changes if that's what it needs.

    Thank you.

It seems I am in the opposite situation: my cut & paste does not merge, unless I choose the rt-click paste>merge option. By default, my list items retain their number level, whereas (if i have understood you correctly), yours adopt the level they are inserted into. Sorry for being contrary! Martin

Strange indeed. I spent about one hour trying to find what could be the setting and I am almost certain I found what I want! So here is my solution (and if you want the opposite, just set the same option the other way around).

    • File –> Options –> Advanced Options
    • Use Smart Cut and Paste –> check the box, then click on Parameters
      (Couper-coller avec gestion d'espace)
    • Uncheck last option: Merge pasted lists with surrounding lists (last option)

Don't ask me why this setting has been placed there, as it should be along other formatting options, but anyway!
