Sorry for the disappointment. You have spurred my conscience, so I went back and tried the HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\ and was successful in creating a key and reading back from a different user account values set in that key. Thanks for your contribution and for your urging me to apply myself. Its just that at 80 yrs of age I was beginning to feel this is all getting be be beyond me.

You can't know how pleased that makes me! At a mere 69, I am, of course, full of vigour and raring to go solve the next interesting problem.
