Trouble loading documents with Office 2010.

I have Microsoft Office 2010 on my PC, I recently removed Office 365 as it came pre-installed with my PC and is a trial version which was never activated. So I thought it may aswell be removed from my PC, as whenever I click a document it opens up in Office 365 by default. But now when I click a word document it says this app can't run on this PC, but if I open Word and click Open, and find the document it will open. Is there a simple way to rectify this?

I would guess that the file association for Word docs is hosed after you removed the program that used to be associated. Try going to Settings>Apps>choose apps by file type and selecting Word for the appropriate file extension(s) - but that list of file types is very long, so an alternative:

rt-click a word doc and select 'open with', and, if Word is not in the list, select 'choose another app' then select Word (and select the 'remember' button). If Word is not available, go to bottom of list of 'more apps' and select 'look for another app'. Once you find Word (the executable, probably in program Files (x86) , open the document. Then the next time you try 'open with', Word should be in the list and you can tell it to remember the choice. Oh how simple MS makes it!

I've tried the repair tool but unfortunately no success.
Before I submitted this post I had already tried to open a document by right clicking and choosing open with, and then clicking Word 2010, but I just got that error message. I'll try looking in the program files folder as mentioned above and see what happens. Otherwise I may try a reinstall.

That error message specifically mentions 'app', which is a modern Windows 10 term, and I would not expect that if Windows was trying to open a conventional program, so I think Windows is trying to open an app, probably the 'trial' vn of Word-365 (or whatever it is called). That is why you have to go beyond just trying the available options. If indeed that error occurred after selecting 'Word 2010', I am surprised - it suggests MS has hijacked the 'W 2010' name for its own purposes - sneaky. You are not the first person to be caught out by having 'multiple' Office options, whereby the 'real' one becomes displaced by the 'free trial'.

So looking at my list of documents some are older than others, but some have different file formats, the only documents that I can successfully open by clicking on it normally is one in a "Rich Text Format", and any that are in the Microsoft Word 97-2003 format. All of the others are in "DOCX File" which will not open by clicking on them.
I thought I'd open a new blank document and just write the word "Test" and click save as, under where I type the file name it says save as type, and has "Word Document" by default filled in, and after I click save it saves it as a DOCX File, and when I tried to open it I again got the same error.
Strangely the document in the Rich Text Format has 617 characters in the document and is only 2KB, but the document where it has only the word 'test' in is 13KB, even though it is in the DOCX format.
If I start a new document, click save as and select "Rich Text Format" then everything is fine. But is a slight pain with all the older documents, how come it won't it open DOCX files?

I haven't no, I ran the repair tool but haven't yet reinstalled the whole program from scratch, perhaps that is the next thing to try.

I think I may have solved the issue, I right clicked a DOCX file, and selected Open With, but realised it said Microsoft Office 2010 Component. I then selected Microsoft Word from the list, and it opened. I noticed also that the Word Icon on the document has also changed, so before the icon must have still been from the trial version.
