Outlook can't send but can receive

    Windows 20H2
    MS Outlook 365 16.0.13901.20276

I had cause to restore my system after a system failure. All was restored OK except MS Outlook 365. After fiddling around for a while I have got all my folders restored and can now successfully receive mail. But I can't send. What do I need to set to ensure mail is sent correctly. I have checked to IMAP settings against those on another computer which is sending emails OK.

I suggest you recheck the port number in the Advanced tab, Outgoing SMTP server against the number specified by your email ISP rather than another computer.

The only time I have had your symptom was when I had not updated the port number [because the old one still worked on my normal network-ISP] but then stayed in a hotel that blocked that old number.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Hi there
latest update of office (2019/365) has really hosed up manual settings of these email accounts on Outlook -- even via the run command Win + R keys and outlook.exe/profiles gives you the "Kindergarten" auto settings instead of the old manual set up with all the sensible options available.

What on earth are these email clients all doing these days -- if you don't have a bog standard gmail account or something in the basic database you are 100% hosed up.

Sometimes in trying to make things too "Idiot proof" actually causes more problems than it solves. Especially if any serious maintenance has to be done or the "Simple method" doesn't work.

Strangely enough the original way of fixing accounts via proper manual setup again is to use the emaiil (outlook) applet in the control panel --that's now working again properly. So forget the outlook.exe/profiles method and use the CP applet - at least for now --probably will change again with next release.

    1) outgoing Server - use same credentials as inbound if that's the case or use login and password if required - depends on ISP / Email server being used.

    2) use box to change port (2525 is often a good one if port 25 is blocked) and use dropdown for authentication method if you need e.g ssl/tls or whatever. Usually the default Nothing / no authentication is fine.

Visit you ISP's page and look for their email setup procedures and make sure you have the correct port setting for both incoming and outgoing email...

You can enter the advance setting by going to Control Panel, click Mail (Microsoft Outlook). Click Email Accounts..., choose the offending account and click Change, click More Settings..., and click the Advanced tab. There you will see your incoming and outgoing ports. Make sure the correct port is listed.

I've had issue where if one port is wrong yo either don't get email, can't send it, or both.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. In the end I was able to establish a new profile which worked correctly although as far as I could tell it was exactly the same as the original profile.
