Outlook used to come in Office is now separate. Big surprise.

I was lucky enough to get one of the few Outlook 2019 hard boxes on eBay. There is some guy with a great reputation that had 89 Outlook 2019 DVD boxes left. So I snagged one since none of the regular places like Amazon, Walmart, BestBuy, Office depot, NewEgg, didn't have a hard copy, just downloads.

I refuse in principal to be forced into a subscription like Office 365. I'm sure it the best thing since sliced bread, but I'm old and disabled so I want to learn how to do one thing and just use that until I'm not walking this earth any more. Outlook 2019 fulfills that wish. It has to be a hard box because I don't want to search through endless piles of paper or ancient emails to find out what the key is. A simple box on the shelf with the key inside it fits that bill.

By the way, I still use MS Office 2010 and think its just fine. Its staying on my WIndows 10 Professional 20H2 PC and that's that as they say.

I'm using Office 2013 and Office 2010 on their own Desktops and Office 2000 on a couple of Notebooks. I did a Custom install of Office 2000 leaving out Outlook as I didn't need it there, do Web mail on them. Outlook 98 was the only version I saw that was not with the Office suite but most of the other app versions were always available separately from the suite, was released by itself as a replacement due to problems with Outlook 97. My first was Word 6 which also came with Office 4.x.

    Hi folks

I hate "subscription type software" -- which is why I kept Photoshop CS6 etc.

Office 2010 still runs perfectly on XP - here's outlook on an XP Virtual machine. Nothing wrong with using things like outlook on XP as it doesn't involve the use of any browser. !!!!

Outlook used to come in Office is now separate. Big surprise.-screenshot_20210411_102245.png

Apart from the odd bits (which 99% of users won't even know about, much less even use) on EXCEL 2019 I can't really see why I need to get newer versions of office -- I do have on W10 Office 2019 as I got cheap ones which are still valid) and apart from some "Work in teams" sorts of things I can't really see the point of updating.

    Even OUTLOOK EXPRESS works properly.

I'm not against updaing and getting newer releases if they bring things to the table --I'm not sure if office updates from OFFICE 2010 are really worth the bother. People are too taken in by "Unnecessary security concerns" -- if you don't use a browser on XP there's minimal risk !!!

Most non browser related email systems use these sorts of commands as shown below (or even you can do it via telnet).

Easy to run from a Linux Virtual Machine - set the script via crontab to run say every 2 hrs or how often you think your ISP changes the IP assigned address -- they won't usually on fibre systems once you've logged on but at new logon the address could have changed. Depends on the ISP.

If you have the linux WSL this will work too. Very simple script to email yourself your "outside" IP address - saves messing around with things like teamviewer or dyndns etc etc. You might need to add password / etc but for a lot of common email servers this should work.

    /bin/bash
    # Send email from bash
    # hrafn simple script to send simple email with your IP address (external)

read -p "Enter SMTP email server address: " server
read -p "Enter SMTP Port: " port
read -p "Enter Your Email Address: " from
read -p "Enter Recipient's Email Address: " to
    # get your public IP address
    myip="$(dig +short myip.opendns.com @ReSolver1.opendns.com)"
    # create message
    function mail_input {
    echo "ehlo $(hostname -f)"
    echo "MAIL FROM: <$from>"
    echo "RCPT TO: <$to>"
    echo "DATA"
    echo "From: <$from>"
    echo "To: <$to>"
    echo "Subject: Testing SMTP Mail"
    echo " "
echo "Your public internet address is "
    echo $myip
    echo " "
    echo "finished"
    echo "."
    echo "quit"

@Berton -- I see it's around 3.50 -- where you are -- do you ever sleep !!! or just back from a nice Saturday night out !!!!!!.

    Cheers

@jimbo45 RE the time, I'm at 6:56AM MT and you are after lunch. I had to work with GMT/UTC for over 30 years, nice to notice where folks may live but once in awhile the site reads their computer wrong or they have their time zone wrong, hard to tell if they don't list their area. I usually call it a day around 10:30PM, did last night, was a bit tired after having to travel 80 miles to a great-grand-child's birthday party and back.

and great to be able to visit grand kids -- some countries are still in "Lockdown Mode" but at least here anybody is allowed to visit -- from anywhere -- Country is safe and has a decent health service as all the Nordic countries do -- so enjoy yourself (and the grandkids) and hopefully we can all be very soon out of this horrible mess that has blighted so many countries and economies worldwide.

At least today (I love English Premier League Football) I can go into my favourite bar and watch Tottenham vs Manchester Utd -- the football game where people actually have to kick the ball and it's a proper Round Ball !!!! not a sort of squashed Rugby Ball.

Current time here is 14.10 and match is on at 16.30 so in this case the site is correct -- We're 1 hr behind BST (British Summer Time) and 2 hrs behind CET (Central European Time).

    Cheers

We are getting closer to normal but still have threats of some mutations starting up.

I'm not a big sports fan but as they say, "to each his own". I avoid 'discussions' about what's the best, who's the best, etc. I do follow the playoffs as to the winners just to know what people are talking about.

Back to the OP, I'm baffled by the title "Outlook used to come in Office is now separate. Big surprise."

Outlook is still a part of Office and comes with most plans - Solutions for your busy life, confirmed. Outlook is also it's own online entity via Outlook.com.

As for subscribing or not, that's your own decision. I use the subscription based suite and love it.

Anyway, It's easy to rail against stuff when you don't understand it or use it.

    Peace

Good to know. The machine I'm building has Office 2010, so we are going to keep that.

We're just going to upgrade Outlook from 2010 to 2019 tomorrow. Then, when I have problems with my ISP. at least I'll get somebody that knows how to configure it so that it doesn't break every other day.

Since the subscription based suite doesn't float your boat I'd definitely go with 2019 Pro Plus.

    And thanks
