Outlook 2016 Error 0x800704cf, Need Password

    Hello,

After a recent windows 10 Pro update, my outlook 2016 cannot get hotmail emails.

I keep getting an error box showing error. Yes I do have internet, posting this from same machine
    Outlook 2016 Error 0x800704cf, Need Password-2021-03-28-outlookerror-01.png

The status bar of Outlook shows
    Outlook 2016 Error 0x800704cf, Need Password-2021-03-28-outlookerror-02.png

    Any idea?

    I did Network Reset,
removed all network adapters and added them back,
    unchecked ipv6 from all adapters

    Thanks

Is the status bar "Need Password" message correct? Maybe the update signed you out?

Clicking on it does nothing so I can't be sure.

    Cannot even repair the account.

Outlook works for Gmail and other Exchange accounts, just not Hotmail

"Hotmail"? I thought you were talking about Outlook. Is Hotmail still supported? Maybe that's why Hotmail doesn't work?

I'm sure I'm not helping, but about 5 years ago (!) MS messed about with the Outlook/Hotmail combination, and it became necessary to create app-passwords (or it did if one was using 2FA). I can't imagine how your setup has been working since then if that is the issue, but have a look here:

    and here:

If that helps I'm a dutchman's uncle! Martin

I think they moved everything to Exchange but emails remain as @HOTmail.com

Thanks to everyone who provided their invaluable input.
This was a network proxy issue and after disabling it, things are working fine.
