I no sooner turned on my PC (19042.884) and noticed that "Updating Office, please wait" was on my screen. After 10 seconds message "Application is unable to start 0x0000142" Never initiated an update, it was just there immediately. Same when trying to start Excel, Word etc. PC had been powered off since 10pm last night?

Thanks for your suggestion. Tried the repairs, but no luck. Started concentrating on causes for the 0x0000142 error and tried some of those. Did several reboots, Safe boots, SFC and scans etc. On the last reboot after those, it started up normal? Went to update and had what seemed a long update [ 2102 13801.20266] rebooted and now seems normal. Reviewing the internet, there are plenty of occurrences for the 0x0000142 error. Hope it never visits again. Will mark this one fixed [Fingers crossed]
Seems a very common problem and I get it too. There are two solutions:
1) reboot
2) Go into task manager -> services and find "clicktorunsvc" and restart that service.
