I have Office 16 installed, need to run Access 2010 temporarily

I have Office 16 installed on Windows 10, need to run Access 2010 temporarily.

I need to convert the format of an Access 97 MDB file to .ACCDB to be run by my Access 16. But to do that I can only make the conversion with Access 2007 or 2010. My current Access 16 doesn't have that capability. What can I do?

Does Access 2010 even run on Windows 10? I don't know. That would be the first thing to find out.

(option 1) If it does, I would make a complete backup image (via Macrium, my preference) of my system, remove Access 16 (if necessary), install Access 2010, and run the conversion. Then copy the converted file off to a separate media (server, USB key, etc), and then restore my system to its original configuration via the backup I made.

(option 2) If is does not run on Windows 10, or even if it does and I don't want to screw with my current system, I'd install a virtual machine (like Virtualbox, my preference), install a compatible Win10/8/7/XP OS in the VM, install Access 2010, and run the conversion in the VM. Then delete the VM when I no longer need it (if you need to recover the disk space).

So multiple options. Need to answer some questions and choose a path.

Me, I have VMs of Win 10, Win 7, and WIn XP hanging around in ViirtualBox images for such situations as this.

Thanks for the ideas. Meanwhile I realize that my wife has a laptop with Windows 10 and no Office or Access. I can buy a stand alone Access 2010 for $25 and put it on her machine to convert the file. I'm thinking of doing that.

Just a note, Office 2010 does work on my Win10 but I haven't a need to use Access much, it will open and seems fine. Office 2007 and later will open Office 97-2003 files. The newer file formats are recognized by the addition of an x on the extension such as .doc becomes .docx.

Another note, Office 2000 also works on Win10 [except I didn't include Outlook] but it needs a Compatibility Pack installed so as to use files from Office 2007 and later.

Office 2010 does run on mine and I still get updates for it. I was given a license for it by the company
I retired from, all of it works fine.

    Stan,

What happens if you try to open that .mdb file in Access 2016? What error messages do you get? This article endorses the two-step approach you describe [97-2007/2010-2016]
Convert a database to the .accdb file format - MSSupport

Both Access 2007 & Access 2010 run on Windows 10.

Are the database contents too confidential for you to ask your contacts if any of them still run Access 2007 or Access 2010 and, if so, if they would mind doing the interim conversion step for you?

    I still run Access 2007.

You do not need to install a previous edition to convert. It can be done with 2016. Only 97 dbases have to be done in 97. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-db0cf7c11acd

The article you & I linked to specifically denies that 2016 can convert a 97 mdb file and says that a two-step conversion is required using an interim version.
