How do I change the white ‘paper’ background colour?

Windows 10 Home, 20H2, build 19042.630 and MS Office Professional Plus 2016, v2011 (Build 13426.20274, Click-to-run), Current Channel.

I am running both Windows and Office as a local account and not signed-in to online versions of either.

All Office apps work fine but I find the white ‘paper’ background too dazzling. I would like to change this colour to something easier on the eye for viewing purposes only and I do not want this colour to be printed out.

I have looked in File / Options but see no way to customise the ‘paper’ colour.

Can anyone tell me how to change it or is it not possible?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
You can change the background colour of any window implemented by file explorer using Qttabbar (free) by Quizo.
Search the forum for Qttabbar for examples.

For a number of other backgrounds,a well-know registry change is possible, else use the free SMACC tool by member superfly (Google SMACC).

Programs like Office, Firefox etc as you suggest often have their own options for this.

(P.S. 'dummies' is just an unfortunate brand name and a top result! )

    I found this thread.....
Change Background of Office 2016 for Windows

Where it states you have to be signed in to do that.

Windows has a dark mode which is what I use. It works well, except for the old 7 OS style windws...ie device manager, task manager and so on.

I used to use the same office suite and being signed in I could change the word document background to a dark gray....as there was no black when I used it.

I faced the same problem throughout W10. White pages were too bright. Someone suggested DCCW, a built in Windows feature to help quiet down the glaring white. See Calibrate Display Color in Windows 10. I warmed up the display just a tad so that it is much easier on the eyes.

Hope you can find it useful. I know me eyes thank me :)

Apart from the above, it is a common mistake for many people to use monitors which are too bright. I do serious photo editing and calibrate my screen to 90 Cd per m2 which is common setting for photographers.

Edwin #4 - That works so thank you. Also it does not print out the colour which is what I was after.

I should have said in my original post that I was primarily concerned with Word and Excel as these are the apps I use most. I have changed the 'Window' colour in Windows itself using the registry editor (Regedit) and this worked for Excel but not for Word so your tip is very useful.

All I have to do now is get the coloured page into the Word template so that Word always open with that colour of page.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

As per Edwin's post #4 I changed the background colour in the Word template normal.dotm (located in Documents\Custom Office Templates) and it seemed to save OK but when I launch Word the page colour reverts to dazzling white again. .

Excel sheet colour is OK but still looking for a solution for Word page colour.

Discovered that if I save-as another .dotm template (Example: GreySheet.dotm) then the new colour is saved OK. It is just the normal.dotm template that prevents page colour change.

    Found a workaround: -

I have created a shortcut on my desk top that points to the GreySheet.dotm template which opens with the customised page colour.

I think I can call this 'Solved' now.
