Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete

    Hi all,
I have some files I want to attach to a new email I am writing. I select the files and tell File manager to send to email. Then I get told that I don't have an email program associated. According to Settings I do.

The screen snips below show the story.
Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete-pic2.png
    then
Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete-pic3.png

    This shows the settings
Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete-pic4.png

and this shows the box that is ticked inside Outlook 2010

I am baffled. One bit of software says one thing. Another bit says the opposite. The whole business of associating applications to types of file seems to have become unecessarily complex. Win7 was never like this. I had 10 years of bliss right from the start.

    I would welcome help.

    Kind regards,

    Jon

Hi, you might try Method 5:
How to Fix 'Right click and Send to mail recipient' not Working - Appuals.com

Another possible workaround (which I used with Thunderbird when Mail Recipient was missing/broken) is to create a shortcut to Outlook in the Sendto folder

    (Run box, Shell:sendto)

You do, however for some reason Windows 10 isn't recognizing Outlook 2010 (a 10-year old app) for that purpose. "Could" be that feature isn't supported for Outlook 2010 under Windows 10.

Anyway, I'm running Office 365 and can do exactly what you're attempting. With that you could try manually installing the images via attachments in the email itself. I know this doesn't solve the problem, but...

    Thanks for help so far.

I have made some progress but the way I have to do it is tedious and very repetetive.
I have to find out the full path name of the executable file I want to run.
Then I perform an "Open with" on a file of the extension chosen, e.g. 'docx, .xlsx, .eml etc. and I go down the dialogue path till I get asked to specify an executable file, when I provide the name I have just found. I tick the box t make the association permenent, and it works and stay working. An issue is that for a video reader that reads in many file formats, each time I encounter a file format I haven't used before, I have to go through this rigmarole. So I don't really feel that I have the issue cracked, it's more of a work-round.

I also have a little poser with Outlook 2010 which works more or less ok (it has just started hanging sometimes just after it's been opened and I have to restart it), but every time now when it's opened I see the message Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete-outlook-2010-startup-error-message-200917.png
Up to today I never saw this message.

I have no idea what causes this. and would be very grateful for ideas.

    Kind regards,

    Jon

This is how you can set an association for a program which has not been configured to register itself as capable of handling that file type.

I.e. for most people that is an infrequent thing to have to do.

If you have a well-known current program that is normally used for those file types, you would not have to do that.

Well when you run a 10-year old app (Office 2010) on a new OS (Windows 10) there's bound to be issues. Yeah, I know many are still running Office 2010, and saying it works, but that doesn't mean every feature works. Perhaps the "send to" from right clicking is one of those "don't work" features when running Outlook 2010?

Anyway, as the OP noted, their fix is a bit tedious and I see no reason why they simply can't open an email / new email and use the "Attach/Insert files" feature from within the email... and you can still choose as many files as needed...

    Quick. Simple.

I did have an ulterior motive of a sort. When you select a group of, say, .jpg files, and take the option to send to a mail client, you can select the degree of compression, and then you can cut the group of compressed .jpg files from the unsent email to do whatever you like with. It's a way of compressing a group of files that was just a few keystrokes in win7 and I don't know of another fast way to do it in win10. I'm not aware of another way of compressing a number of files in the world of Microsoft email but if there is one, I'd welcome hearing about it.
Thanks for your help and kind regards,
    Jon

I understand what you mean about image compression/resizing and the Mail Recipient.

Did you try what I first posted?
And has the Mail Recipient ever worked for you in Win 10 and with Outlook?

    Hi Dalchina,
I just chose the repair option on MS Outlok and the error message I was getting at startup time
Outlook 2010 app association for email is incomplete-outlook-2010-startup-error-message-200917.png
has gone, so that is an improvement. Thanks.

I'll have a wider look around and let you know.

    Kind regards,

    Jon

Sounds like the Mail Recipient problem is solved.

    What remains?
