Using Word 2010 - have lost app association to .docx

I have owned my brand new win10 desktop for a couple of weeks and have installed my copy of MS Word 2010 on it and am using it very much as I have a big community project I have been putting in big hours on. Now suddenly I have just lost the application association that I had for .docx files. When I try and open a Word file, instead of opening Word 2010, as had been happening, the computer suddenly kept trying to start me off on Office 365 and open an account, which I do not want. Why has this just started?
So I uninstalled Office 365 and then went to try and make an app association using “default apps” in the MS terminology, but I was not offered the choice of mentioning anything useful like MS Word, so I chose Microsoft Office (A very bad choice I now suspect)!
When I looked at default applications by file type (see below), I do see Office 2010 mentioned for .docx and when I click on it I see a message saying no installed application! Clearly that is not so as the middle column has already mentioned Word 2010! There seems to be no way to get things back to where they were.

But now if I double click on a Word file (file type .docx) I see the following. I also notice that now all my .docx files have the red Office icon replacing the blue Word one in all File Explorer views. :-(

So do I need to open the app store? I don’t think so as it will not give me access to Word 2010 I feel sure.

See the screen below for the display I get showing the default apps on offer. Where are the document types used by Office? I now find (see RHS of snip below) I may be able to correct it by altering the Registry, to change what some code not under my control in my PC has altered without my permission. I may be able to do this but I know it’s risky and I consider that I shouldn’t have to in this day and age. BTW, The right hand part of the screen snip shows a forum post that I might try – could an expert please advise me?

Funnily enough, I can pick up a .docx file and drag it into a blank Word 2010 document previously opened from the list of icons in the taskbar, where I have the one for Word 2010 placed. The result is a graphics box inside the otherwise empty file, (see below, with the box selected)

and if I double click on that, the file opens. So some sort of associations are there, somewhere.
I can also use the "Open" menu item in Word 2010 to nagigate to a .docx file and open it OK.

I really would appreciate getting this mess sorted out. All help appreciated!
    Kind regards,
    Jon

Have you tried right-clicking on a ".docx" file and selecting "Open with". You should be able to browse to the Word 2010 program.

Back in 2018 after I bought my laptop I installed Office 2010 on it. I think I had the same problem as you did. It seems my laptop came with the Office 365 trial version on it. I had to manually change the association from it to Word 2010.

Some of my clients found it helpful when Office 2007 came out with the new file format that added x to the extension to open File Explorer or the older Windows Explorer, click the View tab, click the Options tab then click View tab to put in or take out the checkmark on the entry about Show or Hide extensions for known file types. Then when looking to open a particular file would have confirmation of the type to be opened. When saving a document one should see several choices, could be .doc for 97-2003 or the newer .docx.

When helping with installing a currently-owned Office license on a new computer it nearly always was better to uninstall any Trial or Click to Run version then reboot and install.

Hi, I followed up the lead gaiven by Mister Ed (I should have looked down that path earlier) and discovered some slightly mysterious thnigs that may have allowed me to fix the problem. I went down the "Open with" path but MS Word 2010 was not shown as an option in the list of apps available but there was an option to browse for (presumably) an .exe file. I went down it but could not find a file winword.exe or even a wildcarded version of the filename anywhere on c: So I Googled "How do I find the executable file for Word 2010" and discovered that that is a research topic in its own right. I looked at a folder with .wbk files in it and noticed that these had the blue "Word" icon next to the file name in the File Explorer listing! So I did an "Open with" on one of these and on the menu that appeared, Word 2010 was offered as an option for the program to use the file. So I chose that and the file opened ok. So I moved on to examine a .docx file in the same way. Now, I was given the menu shown below

which gave me MS Word for the first time (I didn't know if it would be 2010 or 365), but I went for it. I ticked the box to say always do this. The file opened ok with Word 2010 and when I looked afterwards, all my .docx files had the nice blue Word icon restored in File Explorer listings. So, phew, it looks like the problem may be fixed. I will wait a couple of days before saying yea or nay on that. Thanks for all help. Problems do shrink when shared.
BTW, I thank Berton for his suggestion, which may help me in future.
    Kind regards,
    Jon
