Can word processor documents be sent to desktop vs Documents folder

Using Win 10 on Dell desktop PC
Is there a way for documents in Microsoft WordPad and other word processors to be saved to my desktop directly rather than the default which is to Documents?

Sure, you can save them wherever you want.

In my old Office 2007, I open Word, click on File (button, top left) the Word Options button at bottom.

Then click on the Save option at left and change the Default file location:

I don't know the steps for other versions of Office but it should be similar.

You can also use the File, Save as each time and select where you want to save a document.

Yes. The SaveAs dialog allows you to browse to any folder of your choice.

Almost all applications will then show the last saved-in folder when your use SaveAs the next time so you can use the same one again or browse somewhere else if you prefer.

Many applications have a default folder that can be changed in its Options/Preferences but that does not constrain the choice available in SaveAs.

Thanks to responders for their input and suggestions. Yes I am aware that in WordPad one can select a folder to save the document to. However the default with my Win 10 Home WordPad is the Documents folder - I was wondering if one could change the default to Desktop. However there does not appear to be a way. Using the "Save as" does not show the last saved-in folder when your use SaveAs the next time for me.

    That's a different question.
You want to know how to change the default.
Only by 'relocating' your user Documents folder to your Desktop. Move Location of Documents Folder - TenForumsTutorials but it seems a very big step to take just to satisfy WordPad.
I would not be at all surprised to find that somebody has discovered a Registry hack to do what you want more directly & without relocating the Documents folder.

Thanks Denis, you are right it is not worth the effort to move Documents to the Desktop - will live with the manual change from the Documents default to the Desktop for each save in WordPad.

    Hi there

    @fdm2000

you can save to a folder and then save the folder to desktop using method below. It's a Bit "Manual" but it works.

    or for individual files :

    1) browse to file in file explorer
    2) right mouse click
    3) choose send to desktop

For Wordpad, there's no option to change the default save folder. But for Word (2019 version), click File > Options > Save, then change Default Local File Location.

The Desktop folder is a system folder, a dubious location for your files.
    Don't do it....

I always just keep shortcuts to Document files/folders on the Desktop, the reason being if the shortcut disappears the document file/folder itself does not.

You can right click the document or folder and Send to > Desktop(create shortcut) as shown in post #8.
