EXCEL automate download stock prices at end of day

    Hi folks.

anybody got suggestions on how to download end of day data for around 30 - 40 stocks (or more) using EXCEL and its Internet services.

    Basic data is OPEN/CLOSE/HIGH/LOW/VOLUME

This can be downloaded from GOOGLE or YAHOO finance but it's a bit of a manual process and has to be done individually for each share / stock.

There used to be an API from YAHOO which one could use to automate this process -- I don't think that works any more or is so changed that any old app would need a total re-write.

Anybody got an easy system to do this -- I've no problem say in loading up an input file which contains the list of stocks for which I want to get the data.

There are stock data services around but usually they require payments and registration which exposes you to a never ending stream of "Get Rich Quick" and "Try these trading schemes" type of spam and other junk email.

    Cheers

Didn't you have a thread on this a few months back?

I've never found a fully automated way that works LONG-TERM. I've had a bunch of methods that work for months or a year or two and then fail for reasons beyond my control---typically programming changes at the source site.

    I've settled on a NON-automated method. It takes 15 or 20 seconds a day.

I swipe the mouse across what you see below and then paste that swipe directly into cell A1 on a specific Excel tab.

The data is then populated elsewhere in the same Excel file by formula.

It's manual, so it's going to work until and unless Bigcharts disappears or has bad data.....that hasn't happened in the 15 plus years I've been using Bigcharts. All you need is your ticker list.

Screen grab below taken about 5 minutes ago, but I typically grab a couple of hours after the close when all prices are in.

    Hi there
I did have a python method working - but as you say it's stopped working -- changes again on the "source site" or python updates -- no idea which.

I also had a go with a PHP method -- same problem - so it look like your solution is the best -- I'm only dealing with about 20 stocks and a few ETF's so not a big deal.

I haven't got the time (not quite true) or (more truthfully) the inclination to mess around coding this any more -- that's a job for younger ones IMO -- anyway thanks for the reply.

BTW I like Bigcharts too !!!

I use those for "Options trading" e.g MSFT -- very good for "Weeklys" - (No spelling werror that's what the weekly options are called).
