There should not be any relationship between your MSAccount password and your password for this forum.

I write user account passwords down on a piece of paper that I keep inside one of those dog nametag cylinder things attached to my main keyring -

Sorry, I was not clear about which one I meant. The password to my Microsoft Account is what I should have made clear.
My forum password I remember and can also find where I wrote it down.

If you are logged in to your computer on a local user account for which you do know the password, and
if you have logged in online to your MSAccount, and
if you told your browser at the time to save the password, then
look in Control panel, Credential manager for your login.live entry, click on the down arrow to expand the entry and click on Show next to the Password field to see it in plain text.

No, the method requires you to put in the password for the account that you are currently logged in to your computer with and that is the data that you do not have.

When I sign in it accepts the 8 dots in the password field

The dots and sometimes the asterisks are camouflage to hide the actual characters, prevents anyone looking over your shoulder or using a camera to copy the actual password.

Some login panels may have an eye/eyebrow at the right end of the dialog box that when clicked/held will show momentarily what was typed, useful when typed data doesn't work right.

Also, the number of dots or asterisks may or may not correlate to the actual number of characters in a password.
