what happens when I return a computer that has licensed office on it?

I want to return my dell computer to costco. I have already licensed the office suite on it (not 365). I am assuming I won't be able to use that key code on my replacement computer. So, how does this work?

Just uninstall the product from the computer before you return it. You should be able to install Office on a new computer. Worst case scenario you end up doing one of the phone robocalls to reactivate it.

You can check the licence terms. These will be in your Office folders and can be seen online using MS License Terms - all products

In my Office [2007], changing to a different device is permitted and there is no activation challenge when doing so. I believe that the terms of newer versions are similar but, if there is an activation problem, you might get bounced through to somewhere / someone and have to state that the old device has had Office removed / put beyond use.
    - There used to be a threshold of 90 days below which you could expect to get challenged.
