This didn't work but your suggestion inspired me to add another calendar (sporting one) and although this didn't work either, when I reloaded it, the check marks for both calendars were missing. Does this help?

Sorry, no.
You said this is happening on different machines so I don't believe this is a Windows issue or a Windows profile issue.
To me this seems to be an issue with your Microsoft Account.
Do you have any devices that sync to your calendar that could be overriding your choices, something like an Android tablet, phone, iPhone.
I would disable sync and try again.
You could open another MS mail account as a test and see how that calendar is handle. If check mark remains, as mine does, it would confirm that it is either deep in your account or being influenced by outside sources.
If it is with your account you would need a real MS tech to investigate, not an MS consultant on some of their forums.
Let me know about syncing and trying a test Outlook.com account.
One last thought, are you using any aliases in your current outlook.com account?
OK.
Disable sync on iPhone and the problem remained.
I created a new Outlook.com account and the check mark remained so it looks like the problem is deep within my account.
It probably makes more sense financially and time-wise just to resync my calendar with my iphone, and then sync the iphone with the new Outlook.com account and use that going forward. What do you think?
Not sure.
We all do different things with our accounts. Moving accounts sounds easy but depends how many logins you have etc.
I think I might look at exporting calendar from bad account and then import in new account. Of course I'm hoping this setting does come with the export.
I'm exporting now - says it can take up to 4 days! Whether or not this works, I really appreciate your help over the last few weeks.
