Autosave not properly working for a Word document on OneDrive

I have a Word document saved in the OneDrive folder to allow autosave. But each time I open the document autosave is off again, and switching it on I get the message:
Autosave not properly working for a Word document on OneDrive-2020-01-02_16-26-17.png
Clicking that my document gets saved in the same folder, but with a new name: "document (1).docx". When I check on onedrive.live.com I see that both the original and the new "(1)" are there.
However, when I reopen either of them autosave is off again. And when I switch it on I get the above message again.
In the save options "autosave onedrive files by default" is checked.

Is there a way to fix this? I already tried cursing Microsoft for some 10 minutes, but that didn't help. Any other solutions?
    TIA

    I want to verify something:
If you right-click the affected Word file where AutoSave keeps turning off, and select Properties, what does it list as the location of the file?

    Hi, thanks for replying.
not sure what you mean: when I go to "D:\OneDrive\Documents" in Explorer (actually, I use Directory Opus) and check the document properties, then it will show "D:\OneDrive\Documents" as the location, won't it? OK, checked, and yeah, it does. Also, when I open the doc in Word under info the file location it shows the same folder.

Note: I realize that this is not the default location for the OneDrive folder; that would be in my user folder. I don't think this is the issue here, as other files, including .xlsx files, sync and autosave without any problems.

    OK. That sounds good.

Is it only the single Word file that is affected, or is it all Word files?

What version of Office are you running?

It sounds like your OneDrive settings are correct. Check one more time in Word under Options that AutoSave is enabled for One Drive (sounds like you did that already, but I want to see if the option becomes unselected when the problem occurs).

If it is all Word files, your best bet may be to repair Office (and if that fails, reinstall Office). As far as I know, you cannot uninstall just the Word component. You have to do a complete repair or a complete reinstall of the whole Office suite. It is important follow these instructions from Microsoft, because I have seen loads of problems reinstalling the product over the years if this procedure isn't followed. Let us know if you hit any snags:

Do a complete Online repair, not a QuickRepair.

TBH, I hadn't checked other Word docs yet, as I have only a couple of them in OneDrive, and don't edit them that often either. But checked now and they're OK. Which made me think: if it's just this one file, what's different from the others? I rejected the file's content because not very likely, so I considered the file's registration in OneDrive. Could it be that the file's actual status differed from what OneDrive had registered? To test this I moved the file to a folder outside OneDrive, and checked that it no longer showed on my PC nor on the server. Next I opened the file in the external folder, and saved it to OneDrive. Closed that file, and opened the new one in OneDrive. Lo and behold, it now opens with autosave on, and it also begins saving as soon as I begin editing.

Conclusion: though I'm not sure, I do suspect a corrupted registration. I hope this may be helpful to others who face the same problem. (While it doesn't do anything to solve the issue you can still curse Microsoft for a while, it may lift your spirits )

Thanks for your time, and enjoy your weekend.

OneDrive has bugs. The autosave sometimes does not work correctly. Just make a small change in the document to re-activate the autosave.

Check your addins in Word. Just solved this by disabling the Laserfiche Word Addin.
