After many years of Microsoft not allowing my 2003 Office97. Now will.

For years i had tried to install my 2003 copy of Microsoft Office97 and it was not allowed, i wanted to use Microsoft Word.

Now i find i can install it on my older win7 computers and also my Win 10 computers.

Anyone else notice they can install older copies of software?

Maybe you did not fully understand what i posted, so again i will try making more understandable.

Your question Why Microsoft Office97? answer it is because i own a legal copy of it.
Now why do i want it installed, because i contains Microsoft "WORD" and i want to use this item that is included in my 2003 Microsoft Office97.

I hope i have answered your question, and my answers are being better understood, if not please let me know.

You missed the intent of my question - Microsoft Office 97 was released in 1996, that's 23 years old. I was just curious why you'd stick with such an old program.

BTW, I'm not aware of any "2003 Microsoft Office97" so I'm not sure what version you're actually referring to? There is a Microsoft Office 2003, but it certainly didn't include Word 97 - History of Microsoft Office

At any rate you got what you wanted installed so happy for you.

    Peace:)

I was just guessing 2003 after looking at the copy i see a date 1983 and marked Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition on windows 95 also NT or workstation 4.0, also i see in package For Distribution Only with New PC.

So this copy of Office 97 must have been included with my very first Gateway Computer bought around 1983.
And this copy included Microsoft Word.

That makes it 36 years ago and a lot has changed since then.

My wife feels the same way!

If you are looking for a free alternative...

I've not tried anything that old, but I've had success installing Office 2000 on Windows 10. If W10 lets Office97 install now (almost certainly in compatibility mode) then it should work once installed. But there will be some 'inconsistencies', most likely in the file open/save as dialog. You may well find it doesn't handle long file names very well (if at all).

Also, if you want to be able to open/edit/create Word files your Office 97 won't understand the .docx format that was the new standard format from MS Office 2003 onwards. I'd recommend a modern alternative to MS Office, such as the free LibreOffice. You can try the Portable Apps version (no install required) here:

For many years i had been using Kingsoft Office and it's word processor, problem i ran into people using Microsoft Word could not open a Kingsoft file.
since i mostly used the Kingsoft word processor to make a file then copy and past it into an e-mail message it worked good, it was only when people i sent a file made with the Kingsoft did i find out i had a problem.

Also you can't have both Microsoft Word and Kingsoft on the same computer, if you try opening Word it opens Kingsoft, so I have to keep one computer with just Kingsoft on it.

The simplest way to get around this problem is to scan the KS file save it as a PDF file and then people can use their PDF reader to view the KS file, really more work then i care to do but don't need to do it often.

I tried the Libre Office their word processor if i try opening it on computer with Kingsoft Kingsoft open, so i moved it to a computer using Microsoft Word it will opens in MS Word Pad and i can copy it and paste it into a Word Document.

LibreOffice is not a bad free alternative, it mostly gets MS Office stuff right but its not 100%. Are you adverse to buying a new copy of MS Office? Office 2019 is the latest.

I would be very wary of running something 23 year's old. Not only are you leaving yourself vulnerable but things may not work as expected after that amount of time.
