    Running mixed Office versions

Windows 10 Pro version 1909 (OS Build 18363.476) but all versions to date
I have Office 2010 (DVD install) and Office 16 (on-line install). I have had to stay with Outlook 2010 due to apparent issues with the pst file if I run Outlook 2016. I would like to run Word and Excel 2016 to open files, but despite all my efforts, existing files still open in 2010.
I have seen a M$ response on this indicating I should edit the registry. I had a go at this but it made no difference. Does anyone have an idiots guide to how to make the changes in the registry?
As an 'extra', if anyone can cast any light on why the PST file appears to be corrupted by 2016 I would be grateful!

    Hi.
I have no idea what registry changes you are referring to, so I can't comment on that.

I am not sure why Outlook 2016 would have problems with the PST file. Why are you using a PST file? Most people have OST files because they have IMAP set in their email service, not POP.

But, I would suggest you consider using the Thunderbird email client and avoid the problem altogether.

It's a little bit tricky to get the PST file converted into a format Thunderbird can use, but it appears MailStore Home may do it for you pretty easily. See this thread:
Trying to import PST folder(s) | Thunderbird Support Forum | Mozilla Support

Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm sure others will have some ideas for you.

Please describe the symptoms you have observed that make you say you cannot use your pst file in Outlook 2016.

Please describe the 'corruption' you referred to. Have you run the ScanPST tool just in case there was a one-off corruption issue last time i.e. something that just happened to take place at that time rather than a problem caused by the transition between versions?
Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) - OfficeSupport

I successfully used an Outlook 2007 pst file in Outlook 2016 so I do not think there is anything to stop you doing what you wanted & uninstalling the whole of Office 2010 to keep things simple.
    - If you do so, run a proper Office 2010 uninstallation to ensure you do not have problems in the future - see Manually uninstall Office - OfficeSupport
    - Personally, I'd uninstall Office 2016 as well [when you have finished testing] and then reinstall it again so you know no problems are lurking around because of whatever has been happening. But you could just run a repair instead - Repair an Office application - OfficeSupport

    Thanks muchly, both:

simrick - M$ 'help' chap confirmed there can be issues between a DVD 2010 and an 'on-line' 2016 PST. I have good reasons not to switch to IMAP. This is an M$ reference for the registry hack https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...3-e4148ff34116, which although it refers to 2007/2016 may be the answer.

Try3 - cannot recall the PST 'message' but it did say it was 'corrupted' and yes, I ran ScanPST. It still functions normally in 2010.
"I successfully used an Outlook 2007 pst file in Outlook 2016" is good news indeed and it may be that an uninstall/reinstall will be the answer if I cannot sort the registry. I think I would prefer to wait a while and see if the registry thing can be cleared up.

    Mike,

    1 Jobbing the Registry
I used to spend a lot of time in that forum's Office section. The response by Rohn007 is reliable. Rohn007 is highly competent indeed. That discussion also links you through to the GMayor website which I have also used. I regard this as very reliable as well.

I have looked through GMayor's Registry instructions on that page.
    - The reference to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
involves Office version numbers and that might throw you off because they are not logical. For example, Office 2007 has the version number 12.0 whilst it gets more sensible with Office 2016 which has the version number 16.0. Office 2010 has the version number 14.0.
    - This procedure relates to setting file associations i.e. which version of Office opens Excel, Word, ... files which I appreicate is what you want to achieve.
    - I imagine it will all work as GMayor says [and Rohn007 endorses]
    - Do not bother with the section about Creating the toolbar. It is not relevant to either of your Office versions. Your method is a lot easier than ours. You can just go to Excel [etc] options, Customise Ribbon & stick whatever you want wherever you want.

    2 Fixing the pst problem
Don't forget that you can avoid all the Registry editing by resolving the pst problem and then removing Office 2010 altogether.
    - I made lots of notes during my trials of Office 2016 but I do not have any notes about problems with the pst file
    - This thread disagrees and states what was needed to get it working [create a new profile] - PST created in outlook 2010 will not open in 2016 - SpiceWorks
    - These instructions by Diane Poremsky take you through the same procedure but in a more carefully explained manner - Moving Outlook to a new Windows computer - SlipStick Diane is also highly competent so her procedure is going to be reliable.

Your initial post makes me think that para 2 is what you ought to pursue. That will allow you to ditch Office 2010 and just have the single version [Office 2016] on your computer.

Most helpful, Try3. The primary reason for retaining 2010 and running 'both' was to ensure that I 'liked' 2016 since a lot of what M$ think I would like I don't This then created the PST issue and I confess to having put it on the back burner for a while - I can run Word and Excel 2016 easily if I need to, and 'old' stuff opens in 2010, so I do not have a nuclear crisis on my hands.

I also have the problem that I have two laptops that run Office 2010 and I need to be able to interchange PSTs with them since I have not 'upgraded' them - therein another issue!. Lots of good stuff to work through in your post - thanks again. I will report back when I have tried all, but there is no definitive timescale!!

    Mike,

Understood. I now understand why the Office 2010 option & the Registry edit are the way for you to go.
    - Office 2010 support ends in a year [https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle/search/].
    - Having said that, I am happily using Office 2007 still and I intend to carry on using it for another decade.

I spent a year using Office 2016. I did not like it. Particularly Outlook 2016. I ditched it and bought another pair of Office 2007 licences for my new computers.

    [RANT]
    - Contrast seems to be a dirty word. You can hardly see where one part of a window starts and another ends - so, for example, you can hardly see the difference between Outlook email header info and the text contents of the email. It's the same in the Contacts folder. And in the Calendar view, it is difficult if not impossible to distinguish between an all day entry and a timed entry.
    - The popup descriptions of Calendar entries are huge and are therefore hugely distracting. By the time you move your cursor to where you want it you have forgotten why you wanted it there.
    - All Quick access toolbars [QATs] lack colour and you have to look carefully at each one to decide which you want. In Office 2007 the greater use of colour makes them recognisable without actually looking properly.
    - In Access spreadsheet view tables, rows [records] cannot be distinguished because all you can do is alternate two almost identical shades of grey. In Access 2007 I have my rows alternately coloured pale blue & pale green so I can look around the table without accidentally slipping down a row i.e. without reading off the data for the wrong record.
    - In Outlook Calendar view, the 5+ month date picker & the Navigation pane [that were separate in Outlook 2007] are squeezed together into one column in Outlook 2016 so you cannot see more than 2 months and you cannot see your own shortcuts in your own navigation pane because Outlook 2016 pushes them downwards & offscreen to accomodate the annoying date picker whether you want it to or not.
    - In Outlook email folders, there is no clear display of from, to [email account], date sent
    [/RANT]

We obviously rant together............. Another gripe I have found NO help for from M$ (or anywhere) is how to individually change the font size of the Outlook email 'Subject' line on the composition page.

Okay you two. I agree totally with the rant! The lack of contrast is especially difficult for people with vision problems.

Mike, seems Denis has got you covered here. Good luck with it.

Well! The panic is over. A brief re-trace of events - I had a serious go at a relatively senior M$ 'manager' back in February when I hit the PST problem and he confirmed that there would be an incompatibility between PSTs in Outlook 2010 installed from DVD and 2016 installed 'on-line'. I berated him for this and for the lack of warning that existed for anyone going down this route.

Now, today: With my classic ability to screw things up I managed to 'kill' 2016 by fiddling with the registry............. I 'repaired' it (= a new download) and to my amazement it seems that M$ may have taken note of the problem, because the PST is now 'interchangeable' between 2010 and 2016 with no corruption and my 2016 PST transfers from my desktop to my 2010 laptop too..

Thus I will not be pursuing the 'fixes'! Once again, my thanks to those who picked up the problem and contributed. Now - just to change that pesky font size.........................
