Office 2016 - no preview of Excel documents in File Explorer

Brand new laptop with freshly installed Office 2016 (Windows 10 version 1903). I cannot get Excel docs to preview in File Explorer (no problem with all other Office documents and PDFs).

Looking online, I've seen that this is a relatively common problem. I've tried all the solutions found on internet, including registry fixes (even if all my registry entries were already correct), but none of them have helped. I've also tried 'repairing' the Office installation.

I use Office 2016 and Windows 10 (not sure which version) at the office where I work, and there my Excel files are previewed without problems.

Many thanks, dalchina, but I think this is a bit beyond me (or would at least require careful study and a lot of time!)

    Thanks AndreTen,

the Excel previewer is correct. I can see all other types of files in the File Explorer preview pane.

OK, can you preview Excel file as attachment in Outlook?

When you said repair, was it "quick" or online repair?

    Check this KB: KB3114374

Also, you could try this in Explorer:
Office 2016 - no preview of Excel documents in File Explorer-image.png

    Update:

another possibility: Preview Handler Association Editor

This is an old tool, but should still work. i have no experience with this...

Update2: yet another place to look: In Settings type defaults in search bar - select defaults by app and protocol. Check the last entry .- Excel protocol

Thanks a lot, AndreTen; I'll get back to you tomorrow evening once I've had time to try your possible solutions. However, I had already tried the KB fix; it did nothing because I have a click-to-run edition of Office 2016. And yes, I can preview Excel files in Outlook.

I did the 'quick' Office repair.

I think I've now tried all your suggestions, Andre, but there's no change.

When I checked the default apps for file types and protocols, there were three file or protocol types (.xld, .xlsmhtml and .xlxml) that had no default application; I tried to assign Excel as the default app, but was told that there was no installed app for that type of file or protocol, and that I could search for one in the Microsoft Store.

Don't know if this gives you anything to go on.

The strange thing is that the registry entry is correct, and that I can preview excel files in Outlook.

    Sorry to hear that.

What does that tool (Preview Handle Association Viewer) shows?

Yes, on all my computers. Some with Office 365 and one with 2016.

I'm out of ideas. Do you have any other software that could open Excel files? What antivirus software do you use?
