Office 2010 Starter Default Printer issues

Before we start I know that Office Starter 2010 is not officially supported on Windows 10, but up until now it seemed to have worked OK if you upgrade from Windows 7 with it installed.

I have noticed this problem on two separate computers, both have HP Printers (not sure if the problem is limited to just HP), but when printing from Word or Excel 2010 starter it sets the default printer as a different printer to the one in the Windows Control panel.

For example when I go into Word or Excel and Click File then Print, one computer it says the default printer is Microsoft Print to PDF and on another computer it says the default printer is OneNote it even shows a green tick next to these printers and you have to select the correct printer manually from the dropdown list. When I go to the Windows Control panel is shows that the HP Printer is the default.

I have tried Changing the default printer in the control panel to another printer and changing it back again, then rebooting the computer, but Word and Excel Starter still insist that Print to PDF/One Note are the default printers on these computer. Other Programs seem unaffected by this and will pick up the default printer from the Windows Control Panel.

Can anyone help with this problem, Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to TenForums cwaite.

    I have Starter 2010 too.

First, some history. The first release of Windows 10 (10240, 1507) was the only one that did not uninstall Starter 2010 during the upgrade. All subsequent versions from 1511 on will list it as incompatible and insist it is removed - but only when upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. They have (so far) overlooked it when upgrading a Windows 10 where Starter 2010 had slipped through unnoticed in the original free upgrade.

I have no problems with the default printer in Word/ Excel. In fact, if I have Excel open, select File > Print, then change the default printer in Control panel, when I go back to Excel the printer has changed there too. The same applies if I change the default printer in Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.

Have you tried turning off 'Allow Windows to manage my default printer'? I have it turned off.

Thank you, I will give this a try when I can get to the computers that have the problem.
