Warning on default app opening docx file

I upgraded my 8.1 laptop to 10 about 2 weeks ago now. Basically all is OK, but I do run in to quirks here and there.

The latest one is that whenever I dbl-click a .docx (or a .doc) on the desktop or in filemanager, I get the warning below. It nonetheless opens the file correctly. As you can see in the second image, I do have docx associated with word. Thinking I could maybe reset it, I switch it to open via Adobe Acrobat, opened one file, then switched it back to word. I did not get a similar error with acrobat, but when switched back, once again the error shows up with word.

I also tried the filemanager "Open With" context menu, selected wordpad and checked the "always open with". Then dbl-clicked to open with no error. Switched back using the context "open with". Again chosing Word and checking the "always" button. The error is back.

I do not have a similar problem with excel. Haven't tried PowerPoint or Access as I don't have any files readily available to use.

So how can I reset whatever thinks Word is no good?

update - Just realized that it is only the first 'open'. If I open a docx (or doc), I get the warning. If I leave Word open and dbl-click a second file, I do not get the warning.

    Hi spokey

    Have you seen this tutorial?

Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

doc and docx are not listed but Brink says he will build a file for what you need (see tutorial)

    thx

took a quick look and I'll have to ask brink to make one.

I think I did everything but the total default reset. I'd rather not do that as I don't really know what defaults I've changed.

I did try both the quick and long repair from programs/features (PITA for the long as I had to go searching for my product key to input it) with no success.

Just tried dot & dotx. They both have the problem. Interestingly, I "opened with" some random *.rtf and chose word and checked the box. Closed it. Did another dbl-click and it opened the rtf without the warning. It's like defaults are stored somewhere and that's messed up. Particularly given the opposite is also true. "open with" a doc and change to wordpad and everything seems ok until you switch back to word.

    Hello spokey,

In your left screenshot for the "Microsoft Word" error message, what happens if you check "Don't show this message again", and click on Yes or No?

I haven't tried that. I was thinking that whatever the problem was, I would try to get it fixed first instead of just hiding it. If you think trying the check will likely be benign, I give it a try.

If all the file types that support opening with Word 2013 are already set to have it as the default app and actually open with it, then checking the box should hopefully stop the message.

It is fixed. I had been reluctant to do the reset all defaults as I'd have to go and redo all the others like txt, various image, etc.

But before hiding the message, I figured better to try the reset all first and deal with the defaults one at a time as I ran in to them. So far, it seems fixed. Rebooted and have tested doc, docx, dot, & dotx with success. Should have done that before asking you to make a .reg.

Of course the first thing I did was to open outlook and click on the link for your reply and couldn't understand why I couldn't reply. Then couldn't understand why I wasn't already logged in. Then realized my default was now edge and not firefox<g>.

    thx for your help

I have just come across this post and I am having the same issue, is there a fix that will change the default back to word for all users?

    Many thanks,
