Unable to install MS Office 2016 after download from Microsoft

I've downloaded MS Office 2016 from Office saving to a file on my Hard Drive

    Setup.x86.en-US_ProPlusRetail_?????-?????-?????-?????-?????_TX_PR_.exe

I'm trying to install onto a HP Laptop running a fresh install of Windows 10 Home.

However I think something became messed up with earlier attempts to download and install .. as some of the previous downloads failed, what was saved to the hd I ran and I think a version of Office Live was installed which is a web based MS Office.

I've attempted to remove any past MS Office installation using a MS recovery tool without success. I was getting errors that a MS Office installation was already running.

After ending all MS Office Processes I'm still unable to install MS Office 2016 onto the HP Laptop. (running Windows 10).

Currently the installation is stuck on a red box and then a white box with Office logos, stating that it's installing Office.

Goes no where. I'm wondering how to completely start over as a fresh installation?

The SetupProd_offScrub tool that's suppose to clean past installs, doesn't work.

In this support article there is a removal tool for Office. I would run and then install the proper version you want.

Uninstall Office from a PC - Office Support

You might also consider an Imaging tool like Macrium Reflect. Taking a periodic Image allows you to go back in time, reliably, then try install again. (When restoring an Image please consider what it might do to personal data, I keep my data in a separate partition.)

What ever imaging tool you use test the boot media.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

I did try downloading and installing the MS recovery tool That's called Microsoft and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 - outlookdiagnostics.azureedge.net

After running the recovery tool there was a message no version of Office could be found installed.

I think what happened is when an incomplete download of MS office was created Microsoft installed Office Live which is a web based version of MS Office.

However the HP Laptop running Windows 10 "Home" has not MS Office "Live" that I'm able to detect. It shows there to be no MS Office installed.

I can perhaps go into safe mode and revert the registry and OS back to before attempting to install MS Office with failed downloads. i.e. to try and revert the OS and registry back to where the HP laptop was when I received it with a fresh installation of Windows 10 "Home".

However this seems to be futile as the OS's "System Restore" is reporting no restore points have been created.

Currently while trying to install MS Office 2016 from the file downloaded from MS website the installation hangs and does nothing and there is no evidence that MS Office was ever installed. So the OS isn't aware of any MS Office installation whether it's a live or another version.

Apparently something became messed up when I first tried to installed MS Office from incomplete and/or bad downloads where apparently MS Office "live" may have been installed of which there is nothing indicating it was ever installed.

I suppose I can try to install MS Office Live then uninstall it to see if it makes any difference.

I've been installing versions of Windows for a very long time since version 1.x and with each new version some things may remain the same while other things there are changes.

I currently don't want to perform a fresh installation of Windows 10 until I've exhausted other avenues to install MS Office 2016 which I need because I've been using MS Outlook for many years. I don't like the Windows Mail that's now included with Windows. I'm uncertain why MS removed Outlook and Outlook Express? Windows Vista use to include a version of Windows Mail that with similar feature of Outlook.

The newer mail clients imo are crippled versions of an e-mail client. I've tried various 3rd party e-mail clients but all i've used where lacking things found in Outlook which I've been using since before version 97/98.

They removed Outlook Express and the rest for several reasons in my opinion.

First being money. If you buy the version of Office with Outlook client the price is crazy, at least in Canada. If you subscribe to Office they get reoccurring revenue.

The next reason is support, security and compatibility. Live (Windows Essentials) and Outlook Express would have required to much work to bring up to speed, they would have had to many mail clients to support and neither are UWP apps. They still have Win 10 Mail, Office Outlook and the Outlook app.

Hear you on the on the Clean install. Restore Points can be touchy hence the recommendation to Image.

I would think if this is a new HP device they provided a recovery partition that can be used to restore. Your manual will tell you exact sequence. If you boot to Advance Startup options, hold shift key down and click restart, you could do a reset.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

    and the Reset tutorial

    Reset Windows 10

While not clean installs they both will have you re-installing programs/apps and data. (One reset option retains data but kills programs.)

I would ensure your data is backed up off device for any path taken.

Before doing any of this, how confident are you in the Office download file you created. Might be worth downloading one more time to ensure it is complete.

Run as administrator. You might even do the install with a Clean boot to ensure this is not some other software conflict.

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Also uninstall all third party AV's, adware blockers, and third party privacy tools.

I have only a few applications installed on the HP Probook (running Windows 10 Home

I did install Firefox and a password utility I've used for many years. Haven't had the time to install any other applications and utilities. No add-ons or extensions for the browsers Edge and Firefox.

So the OS is already pretty much a clean install. When I was downloading earlier with a very slow connection it appeared that Office Online was installed, which is a web based Office that runs from a Microsoft site.

This thing with MS Office having problems installing I think in part is because MS prefer it's users to have an Office subscription such as Office 365. MS stand alone Office programs don't have the support they once had. Most of their online urls and ads are continually referring users to Office 365 where one purchases an annual subscription.

I have been purchasing MS and third party software for more than 35 years and can't really afford to have subscriptions.

I miss MS Vista mail client and have used mostly Outlook over the years and see no reason after spending thousands of dollars on MS software that I should need to purchase an annual subscription for a mail client.

I think in part these problems of installation MS Office is because MS is trying to gear people to purchase subscriptions. All their ads now seem to offer MS Office 365 as a solution and not MS Office stand alone application.

So yes it does come down to money, MS trying to maintain their profits and users trying to maintain a home PC without going broke in the process.

Currently there is no MS Outlook stand alone program, as in the past must be purchased through MS Office.

Windows Vista did come with a good mail client called "Windows Mail" I'm uncertain about other versions of Windows, some came with Outlook Express which I've used but is a scaled down version of Outlook.

IIRC There is also an Office 2003 and Office 2007 with Outlook. However I'm uncertain of it's compatibility with Windows 10. I seem to remember reading about issues with people trying to use earlier versions of MS Office and Outlook with Windows 10.

The following versions of Office have been fully tested and are supported on Windows 10. They will still be installed on your computer after the upgrade to Windows 10 is complete.

    • Office 365 (Version 16)
    • Office 2019 (Version 16)
    • Office 2016 (Version 16)
    • Office 2013 (Version 15)
    • Office 2010 (Version 14)

Office 2007 (Version 12) is no longer part of mainstream support and hasn't been tested on Windows 10. However, Office 2007 will install and run on Windows 10.

Versions of Office prior to Office 2007 are no longer supported and may not work on Windows 10.

I think I may try to find an older version of MS Office from 2010 - 2013, etc. on CD or DVD ... I can find some Home and Student versions on eBay.

The newer versions of Office and Outlook I don't like all that much MS added a bunch of features that imo aren't really all that necessary for myself. I'm currently running Office 2016 on another PC and find it to be more confusing and difficult to use than older versions of Office. I can see some scenarios where those new features could be of some use, but overall I'm basically looking for an e-mail client that not difficult to maintain and use. The amount of garbage being sent via e-mail has become ridiculous, Even with all the filters I have for junk mail both on the Outlook and the mail server I'm constantly deleting e-mail putting it into the trash.

Anyway I think I'll try a copy of MS Office from 2010+ that has Outlook on a DVD and comes with it's own key i.e. to see if it will install ok.

Note: Some versions of MS Office don't list Outlook as an included mail client.

Try downloading from Office the Official Microsoft site. There is something else causing the installer to halt. If your device is running Windows 10 S, you will need to convert it to a Regular 10 license to not install from the store. which sounds what is happening. Yes MS would like end users to go with the monthly subscription platform for office, since it allows the user to get the latest version and you end paying at a discount through the subscription vs the one time purchase price everytime a new version of Office comes out. Plus side is that you get the Family license to install on five devices vs one.

I did find on eBay a Microsoft Office Professional Academic 2010 With DVD and Key However I'm not certain if the cd key has been used or can be reused. The person found the software at an estate sale.

Some versions of Office 2010 do not include MS Outlook as there are several versions of MS Office 2010.

On my Desktop I'm running Office 2016 but don't really like it. Too much was added making the Office application much more cumbersome to use.

One problem with software development is they are creating software's that much too complex to perform simple tasks.

imo, some software has become or is becoming junk.

If you only have two other programs reset / restore your device to Factory. Get a fresh download and try.

Likely the fastest way to success. MS is still supporting the install of bought Office products like 2016 / 2019.

Your system is glitched or your media is suspect.

After some more searching around on eBay, I found a Microsoft Office Professional 2010, Full retail version for Windows 32/64-bit, With CDs & Keys for 3 PCs, NEW and SEALED!

Since it's a Professional version it includes Outlook.

Note: Some of the MS Office DVDs on eBay aren't new and sealed and even though the auction title says comes with cd key, the status of the key may be unknown.

While this may work support will be ending soon enough.

    Good luck.
