    Hi Ken
Now I have rebuilt the icon cache. Unfortunately there was no change at all.
The icons for word-files on my account are still empty.
Icons for other files are OK.
Word files can be opened OK.
All icons on my wife´s account ar OK.

I rebuilt the icon cache using the BAT file, point 1-6. But I have not done point 7, it looks dangerous.

    Hi Andre Ten
When I go to Programs and Features I cannot see Microsoft Office.

I have a one year subscription for MS Office 365 Home (Downloaded).
So perhaps it is not installed the usual way.

There is always a certain amount of risk with anything we do in Windows. It is for that reason we use Macrium Reflect or a similar tool to Image our machines. If things head south we restore.

It is very important to test boot media for any Imaging tool.

Brink's tutorial are the best on the Internet. They have been used thousands of time. Is there a risk, sure, but it is very low and our Imaging tool lets us try.

    Hi Ken
The day after I rebuilt the icon cache my word files have an icon again.
However, the W icons on my wife´s account have more blue colour whatever that means.

Thank you and thank you for the information about Macrium Reflect and the tutorials.

That could be a host of things from the quality of the displays, contrast or brightness.

To see if it is the icon or the displays you might try some side by side colour comparisons with some pictures that you know to be identical.

The tutorial on here about rebuilding icon caches is only partial, there is more to it than that.
Be very careful, make sure 100% of what you are doing.
I have used that tutorial, slight improvement but not much.

More extensive Cache rebuilding made some more improvements.

However, after all that messing about, currently it is back to square one after a few days.

They function correctly just they have the wrong icon or a blank one. These wrong ones/blanks were mainly in the Settings App at various places.

Additionally I have used a reset on some Apps, and used the Store Apps troubleshooter, changed Icon/Thumbnail options, SFC, DISM command line stuff, none of which have done anything.

I use a test user account which has a much smaller user profile, that seems OK. So it maybe something in the user profile, what/why I have no idea.

Irritatingly these Icon cache problems go back at least 20 years to the days of Windows ME and before.
They seem to have gotton worse in some update after 1903.
