If I click on a DOCX file, it always opens in LibreOffice.

I have Office 2010 with Win 10 Pro.

If I click on a DOCX file, it always opens in LibreOffice.

Here's how I open the DOCX file:

    - R-click on the DOCX file
    - Click Open With
    - MS Word is in the list, but ignore it (see later).
    - Click Choose Another App
    - Click MS-Word
    - Check "Always use this app..." (the earlier option would not display the check box).

The selected file opens. Close Word.

L-click on the DOCX file. The file opens in LibreOffice.

The above actions can be done immediately after a reboot, or a normal boot - but L-click never opens the file in Word.

    I would appreciate any advice.

Footnote: I like to keep LibreOffice installed and updated, so I can practice occasionally in case MS stop supporting Office 2010.
    Thanks.

You could use LibreOffice Portable to avoid interference like this.
2010 does not fully support docx, so maybe that is why LO takes over.

    Thanks for your response.

I actually have no personal preferences for the saved format. Would ODT be a good format to preserve interchangeability?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, officially supporting formats do not guarantee, they can be opened properly. Like my office docx can be opened in anything, but openoffice shows an empty document, libreoffice opens it broken, etc.

You might try other office suites, which are more compatible with Microsoft formats, like WPS or FreeOffice.

I'm sorry but that article does not include your astounding claim.

Docx format was introduced with Office 2007 and remains the standard Office Word format.

    OldGrantonian,

This is a public forum where many people contribute. It is natural for different people to have different opinions.

You have a file association fault. You will only fix it by focussing on that fault not by going off on some wild goose chase.

That is the fault. That is what to focus on. As a start, consider these checks -
    1 Consider Windows faults
1.1 Check the file association records at Settings, Apps, Default apps, Choose default applications by file type - set the same ones that I have set
If I click on a DOCX file, it always opens in LibreOffice.-screenshot-384-.png
    1.2 Run SFC - TenForumsTutorials
    2 Consider Office faults
    2.1 Repair MS Office
    2.2 Reinstall MS Office
2.3 Uninstall LibreOffice then, possibly, Repair Office again then, if you want to, reinstall LibreOffice being careful to use custom install options so that you can tell it not to set any file associations.

Office 2010 will be supported until 13th October 2020.

I have several versions of Microsoft Office running [on different computers] and it is Version 2003, XP/2002 and 2000 that need the Compatibility Pack to be able to work with the newer .docx, .xlsx, etc. file formats of Office 2007 and later.

I also keep LibreOffice on all computers due to its wide list of formats it can work with but do need Microsoft Office now and then for sharing files with clients.
