Add office 2007 to old Win7 laptop after clean install w/ Win 10 1809

Greetings fellow W10 users. I would appreciate some guidance in an upcoming project (maybe today if time permits).

I have an old Dell 1747 laptop that I plan to complete a clean install of W10-1809. This is a 64b pc with an early gen i7 cpu, 8GB RAM, and 2nd 2.5" drive bay (not the DVD bay) where I've installed a Kingston 240GB SSD.

My concerns are specific to maintaining ms office 2007 after it was retired in October 2017. After reading and posting in another thread, I've learned that this is possible. Thanks Denis, this pleases me and I understand it may work for a day or years. I'm OK with that.

I have reviewed several clean install directions and will also check a couple more here, thanks again Denis.

For running a clean install of Windows 10 directly from a Windows 7 installation, see Directly Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First - TenForumsTutorials
The main tutorial is at Clean Install Windows 10 - TenForumsTutorials

My plan was to remove the primary HDD during the installation to avoid any possible loss of data files. I am aware that my chosen version of W10 will eventually require an upgrade. I have decided on 1809 as that's the OS on my primary PC, by my choice will be until it is necessary to update, and I'm confident in the features it contains, good and bad.

Denis, I have no plans for a dual boot machine, at least not with Win7. At a future date, I might like to explore using Linux on my old Dell and may also consider making it a dual boot W10/Linux. Is there any benefit to making a small partition for Linux before the W10 install?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance. Cheers,

    Michael

    W10 tweaker,

Yes you can clean install Windows 10 & Office 2007. I have done so myself. The last time I did it was 13th April 2018. I have Office 2007 running quite happily on four Windows 10 computers.

At some uncertain stage, Windows 10 might get an update that stops Office 2007 working. So anything we do to install / set up / improve Office 2007 on our computers has to be justified as useful for the time being rather than "worth doing if it lasts five years longer". But that wretched update might never come. Or it might come tomorrow.

For running a clean install of Windows 10 directly from a Windows 7 installation, see Directly Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First - TenForumsTutorials

On my old Dell Inspirons 9300 & 1545, I swapped my DVD bay for a caddy containing a HDD. I don't know if that's what you mean.
My newer Dell Inspiron 7779 has two drives built into it [an M.2 one & a SATA one] so you might mean that sort of thing.
In all cases, the additional drive is used for my own files and the main drive is used for the OS & applications.

I would suggest upgrading / clean installing on a single drive [with the other one disconnected so nothing can get put on it to limit future boot options - I have seen threads in which people are suffering from not having done this].
Choose your fastest drive and install the OS & applications on that provided that it is at least, say, 80GB.
Then put the slower drive back on and 'relocate' your user folders onto it.

There is something about your wording that makes me think you are considering a dual-boot arrangement. I would urge you to avoid that unless there is a specific need for it. I have run Win7-Win10 & WinXP-Win10 dual boots and they work reliably but you do need a licence for each [your Win7 licence will not cover both OSs in a dual-boot].

If you are going to ask for any more info then start a thread of your own, post its address here then cutnpaste your posts onto it & I will do the same. Then we can both delete our posts here. That way we are not cluttering up Kol12's thread [those issues are still live so our posts could easily cause confusion & incorrect advice].

    W10 tweaker,

And I can see that I did not address the issue of your old Dell's compatibility with Windows 10. Dell do not even consider the subject for their older computers but many can run Windows 10.

    - My 15 year old Dell Inspiron 9300 ran Windows 10 32 bit with a couple of shortcomings up to Version 1709 and cannot get past that. It still works on Version 1709 but that is out of support so I have set the router to deny it internet access. I use it for time-consuming odd jobs that my newer computers regard as being beneath their dignity.

    - My 9 year old Dell Inspiron 1545 runs Windows 10 64 bit quite happily and is currently on version 1903. It has developed a Taskbar & System tray ["Notification area"] problem that I think is going to turn out to be an outdated display driver issue but I am working around it for the time being. This computer spends its time being my TV recorder.

What old Dell are you talking about?

This discussion is the reason we should be using a separate thread - our posts might mislead somebody about Kol12's system. Please create your own thread so we can cutnpaste these posts into it.

    Denis
That completes my attempt at migrating posts from another thread.

    Michael,

I think you would benefit in the future from having created a partition for Linux now. That will make things more straightforward if you do decide to set up a Win10-Linux dual-boot in the future.

The Windows you are about to clean install will normally demand use of the whole unpartitioned disk so, if it does, you can just shrink the Win10 partition afterwards using Disk management [C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc] or a third-party tool such as MiniTool Partition Wizard.
    - I have experienced Win10 allowing me to install to an existing partition without complaint & it refusing to cooperate until I have agreed to let it use the whole disk. I could never understand what made it turn one way or the other.

You could search the Dell user forums for your model to see if there is any decent guidance from somebody else who has done it. https://www.dell.com/community I have had useful exchanges about installing Windows 10 with other users there [but I have also had the opposite albeit from people who probably meant well].

So, I think that is everything I could usefully say about the OS side of things.

    Office 2007

If you still have your original installation disk then that's fine. I copied mine to an HDD for permanent retention and it also installs fine from there. No special procedure was needed, it was just xcopying.

If you already have your product key card then that is also fine. If not you can extract it from your current Office 2007 installation using Belarc.

If all that is true then I do not foresee any difficulties during your Office 2007 reinstallation. [The caution I expressed in that other thread was because that user just needed Outlook not the whole suite and I did not know about product keys & downloads for that].

There are some useful things to check & backup in your existing Office 2007 installation -

    Outlook
I use 'pop' email retrieval so everything in my Outlook is in my pst files.
    - I relocated my pst files to a folder within my Documents so they'd get included in my routine backups. The main one is called Outlook.pst & its archive is Archive.pst by default but you may have created additional ones for various reasons.
    - If you use IMAP or EAS [Exchange] email retrieval methods then I understand that you might have only ost files or a mixture of both ost and pst files.
    - If I understand ost files correctly [never having used any] then the server rebuilds them for you anyway.

The default pst file location is %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook and the .kml and .obi files that you might find in there are worth copying [but they might not exist if you have not used Outlook for RSS feeds. You can also backup extend.dat but I am in two minds about its usefulness.
    - More configuration files are in %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook
    - You'll find info on these configuration files in Outlook Help 'Where does Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 save my information and configurations?' but note that rwz files are no longer used by Outlook itself - Rules are now saved within pst files.
    - Your email signatures are in a set of files in, by default, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery but you might well have relocated them [which is as easy as relocating templates, see below].

    Excel
    - Check in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART - it might be empty but you might have put Excel templates there in the dim & distant past.

    Word
    - Check %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
    - Check in Word options where you have set your templates, signatures, dictionary (for the whole of Office) and back them up - Word, Options, Advanced, File locations

    Whole-Office issues
    - Check for any add-ins in %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns
    - If you use VBA then check your modules are copied somewhere. Outlook does not save its VBA within the pst file so you need to copy that separately but the others are normally straightforward - the VBA lives within your own files so there is no danger of losing it.
    - If you have added any add-ins then check that you have their installation files & setting up info. Add-ins do not normally get saved within your own files.
    - Copy any .QAT files from %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office - these are your Office Quick access bar definitions and you can just copy them back in after reinstallation to avoid a lot of setting up work.

Those are all the actions I have in my reinstallation notes. If there is anything missing it should be minor or I'd have added it in.

    ms office 2007

Hi Denis, I was reviewing your link; Office 2007 Direct Download Links and wondering do I require the downloading tool?

    I just looked at my old laptop and ms office has the following;

    access
    excel
    infopath
    outlook
    powerpoint
    publisher
    word

AFAIK, it was win7 home premium with ms office professional plus 2007.

The sw was pre-installed in my Dell, no disks. I did pull license info with Belarc.

My pst files for outlook are already backed up to another disk (D:), and I haven't used outllook very much recently. It only has historical value for me.

Given that I plan a clean install on an SSD while the HDD is removed, I'm not worried about recovering anything off of the old C:

According to Microsoft Office 2007 - Wikipedia, you must have Office 2007 Professional Plus, Enterprise or Ultimate. So your AFAIK seems correct.

In your Belarc 'Computer profile summary' under the heading Software Licenses [two thirds of the way through mine]
    - It will state the edition/version of Office next to the Product key. So you should be able to get confirmation there.
    - The Product Key is the set in brackets not the number before the brackets. It is in the format xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx [5 groups of 5 characters]

I have never had to use the HeiDoc Office downloads.
    - I do not think their download tool could be useful anymore. Surely MS have pulled the Office.iso file by now. They have certainly pulled their own direct Office.exe file download [I checked that earlier today]. There's nothing to stop you trying but I do not expect it to achieve anything - HeiDoc do not even mention Office 2007 in their description of their download tool.
    - I do not see Office 2007 Professional Plus in HeiDoc's list.
    - I could not find it on Amazon either. Perhaps there is a disk going on eBay?

Unless you can get the installation file / disk somewhere you will not be able to do your reinstallation. Office 2007 Professional Plus was not a particularly common Edition so it's unlikely that you can just scroll around to a neighbour to borrow a disk.

    Oh, dear.

ms office professional 2007 iso downloads

I found some links for ms office 2007 iso downloads. I go to my wife's workplace to download big files, my wireless at home sucks. I'll start my win 10 upgrade today and report back if I was successful with ms office. and provide the links I used for iso's.

You found a link for an Office 2007 Professional Plus ISO? Well done.

I had better not nag about making a system image before upgrading because you have already done that.

    Windows 10 1809 installed successfully

Just an update on my Dell 1747 upgrade; All appears successful so far.

Thanks for the backup image prod Denis, I caved yesterday and bought a new 5TB Backup Plus Portable. Now all the active PC's in the house will be imaged asap. 3 laptops and 2 desktops.

Being a bit stubborn, I insisted on finding an ISO for W10 - 1809 just because.

Obtaining the older version was only a slight PITA. I used Edge (tsk tsk) in an ipad emulation mode to visit the normal ms download site. With this modified browser it allowed the option of 1809 or 1903. I chose 'download for another pc' and made an ISO on a blank bootable stick. ISO is 5.08GB .

    Using Edge, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...d/windows10ISO
Right-click somewhere unimportant on the page, select 'inspect element'. A small window will open.
Click 'Emulation' from the small pull-down to the right side of Debugger (top of the window).
From Device pull-down (top of page), select ipad. You may have to refresh the browser, maybe not.

Now you should see the 'update now' button on the ms page has changed to select edition. Offers are 1809 or 1903.

The Dell 1747 has 2 drive bays (identified as S1 and S2 in the bios). I had to install the SSD in S1 (primary) where the HDD was in order for it to boot correctly while I had the old HDD installed (still with win7 files) in S2 (secondary bay).

When I had first installed windows 10, the HDD was removed and the SSD was in S2. It all worked fine in S2 until I installed the old HDD back into S1, then it attempted to load win7 instead. I shuffled SSD to S1 & HDD to S2, it still tried to load win 7. Removed HDD and booted successfully with SSD in S1. Installed HDD in S2 and now it works fine and boots to win 10.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate an ISO for ms office 2007 professional plus. I have found several offerings on ebay for an install disk.

Thanks to members of tenforums.com for directions on performing a clean install and many other great articles. Cheers,

    Michael
