Why on earth Ms made the whole thing more complex by getting the automated account set up procedure so difficult to bypass I have no idea -- the manual settings IMO always work better anyway.

    Cheers

@jimbo, Google will only allow secure apps from October 30th for gsuite (maybe gmail to follow), I think only Outlook 2019 and 365 conform as they interface with Google for the extra authentication stuff - G Suite Updates Blog: Limiting access to less secure apps to protect G Suite accounts
Anyway I wont take this any further off topic.

I still get this message that OL can't sign me in to IMAP.

The message is "Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for xxx@gmail.com.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for xxx@gmail.com. Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

This error message seems to indicate that there is something more to this problem than the set-up instructions. There are references on line for error code 0x800CCC0E, so I need to investigate those.

So, for those telling me to read the instructions: I have. Repeatedly and continually. The Google app and authenticator are installed on my Samsung telephone. This is not a case of me not being able to read or lack of experience with Outlook and Gmail. As I pointed out earlier, I have used both for many years.

The problem was solved by doing a re-install of Office. The account was enabled.

I had the same problem since several days.
No probleme with the Iphone, but no way with Outlook 2019.

I solved it by using the application generated password by Google.
It's generate a 16 letters password, you have to use in Outlook in imap mode, without other specification.

    For Office (Outlook) 365...

Out of curiosity I just tried adding my Google email account to Outlook 365 android app and it tool less than 5 seconds to complete. All the Outlook app did was ask if I wanted to use my Google email account and that was it.

Just used the instructions here - Add a Gmail account to Outlook - Outlook to add my g-mail account to my PC's Office 365 Outlook and it also took less than 5 seconds and is up and running.

Again, the is with Office (Outlook) 365. Can't speak for other Outlook versions.

As I stated earlier in the thread, I had to reinstall office. After I did that the set-up worked fine. However, since that time the Gmail account vanished, wouldn't install again, then a few days later it installed again without issue. At the moment it's fine.

I wish MS would do that for 2016. I have to do this every time I want to add a gmail account.

I'm re-opening this for the benefit of other users who are looking for a solution, although you won't find one here unless someone can provide a fix. The problem is well-reported on other web sites and there are many, many people trying to either install or keep their Gmail accounts connected in Outlook. Almost every day or two I will set-up Gmail on Outlook 2019. It installs easily (see comments above), connects and imports email. A few hours later, there is an Outlook warning that it can not connect to the IMAP folder. I try to repair the account to no avail and end-up removing it, and re-installing after a re-boot or two. Wash hands, repeat. I'm slowly disconnecting from using Google services so at this point setting up Gmail in Outlook is really only to see if it stays connected. So far no joy.

This happened with one of my wife google accounts a couple of weeks ago, after doing a lot of reading the cure was bizarrely changing the imap and smtp servers from imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com, I would have thought they were the same thing but touch wood she hasn't complained about being asked for the password again.

@z3r010 are you using Office 2019 or 365?

I did the auto setup in Office 365 to connect my G-mail account and this is what it's using....

Haven't had any disconnect errors or issues since setting it up 3 weeks ago.

It was 365, but just one of the 4 google accounts was problematic.
