    Office 365 subscriptions - On how many devices can Office be installed


    A question often asked is "I have an Office 365 subscription, on how many computers can I install Office desktop apps?".

    The answer is, it depends on the subscription plan. O365 Personal and O365 Home subscribers can install Office desktop applications on an unlimited number of devices, whereas O365 Business, Enterprise, Education and Government subscriptions allow one user to install Office on maximum five devices.

     Microsoft 365 Personal

    • One user with a Microsoft Account
    • Office can be installed on unlimited number of computers (PC and Mac)
    • Maximum 5 computers can be online at the same time
    • Installs can be managed (Office removed from specific computers) on Microsoft Account management page

     Microsoft 365 Family

    • Six users, subscriber with a Microsoft Account can share Office 365 with five additional users
    • Each user can install Office on unlimited number of computers (PC and Mac)
    • Each user can have maximum 5 computers online at the same time
    • Installs can be managed, Office removed from specific computers on Microsoft Account management page

     Office 365 Business

    • One user
    • O365 Business Essentials only contains Office Online apps, no desktop applications
    • O365 Business and Business Essentials, Office applications can be installed on maximum 5 computers
    • Installs can be managed (Office removed from specific computers) on My Account page on Office Portal

     Office 365 Enterprise

    • One user
    • O365 Enterprise Plan E1 only contains Office Online apps, no desktop applications
    • O365 Enterprise Plan E3 and Plan E5, Office applications can be installed on maximum 5 computers
    • Installs can be managed (Office removed from specific computers) on My Account page on Office Portal

     Office 365 Education

    • One user
    • O365 Education Plan AE1 only contains Office Online apps, no desktop applications
    • O365 Enterprise Plan A3 and Plan A5, Office applications can be installed on maximum 5 computers
    • Installs can be managed (Office removed from specific computers) on My Account page on Office Portal

     Office 365 Government

    • One user
    • O365 Government uses O365 Enterprise plans
    • O365 Enterprise Plan E1 only contains Office Online apps, no desktop applications
    • O365 Enterprise Plan E3 and Plan E5, Office applications can be installed on maximum 5 computers
    • Installs can be managed (Office removed from specific computers) on My Account page on Office Portal

     Office 365 Pro Plus

    • One user
    • Office applications can be installed on maximum 5 computers

    Yeah! many people don't have the clear idea of O365 plans and which one to go with. So very helpful answers. To know the exact features one can also check out the Microsoft plans pages.

    Kari - for Office 365 Home you wrote, "Each user can install Office on unlimited number of computers (PC and Mac)".

    Is that really true?

    I thought the limit was a maximum of five or six machines (PC or Mac) regardless of the number of users. But unlimited on other devices like tablets.

    Am I wrong?

    Try3 (Denis) and Kari - I'd love it to be unlimited machines for each of 6 users, but I don't see that exactly in the link that Denis supplies directly above. Please confirm.

    Maybe it is the fact that English is my fourth language, that I cannot express myself clear enough in English. I don't know. I will just repeat, what I told in original post:

     Office 365 Personal

    Kari - thanks. I see it - no more than 5 computers online at same time. So that's how MS imposes a limit.

    Question: If there are three users in our Home subscription, and each is online on his PC or Mac, but at the same time each has an iPhone or iPad that is also online, do we have a problem because six devices are online at same time?

    No. The five at once is per user:

    In addition, the limit only applies to computers, PC or Mac. Tablets and mobiles using Office Online apps are not counted, you can have 100 iPhones logged in to Office Online apps at the same time.

    Unlimited number of devices, maximum five PCs or Macs online at the same time.

    Kari - Toivottavasti sinä, perheesi ja ystäväsi voit hyvin.

    More than a year later, I have a follow-up question.

    So we have MS 365 Family. Right now, three of us (Mother, Father and Daughter) are using it, each with one of the six subscriptions on his or her separate PC (and on lots of iDevices).

    So, Daughter's PC has her MS 365 subscription, but Father is also a user account (not 365 account) on that PC as administrator of that PC. Can Father now activate his existing MS 365 subscription as a user on Daughter's PC without using up another of the six MS 365 subscriptions? if yes, Father's MS 365 subscription would be activated on both his own PC and as an admin user on Daughter's PC, and Daughter's MS 365 subscription would be activated on her user account on her PC .

    Do I have that right?
