    Can't save spreadsheets in .xlsx format

    I am still using the old Office XP (2002) software. My Windows 10 pc has the 'Compatability Pack for the 2007 Office system' installed. Looking in Default Programs, .xlsx is associated with 'Microsoft Open XML Converter'. when trying to save a spreadsheet, the Excel 2007 Workbook ".xlsx" is not listed under File Name. Only Excel Workbook ".xls" is listed. This is working fine on my Windows 10 laptop.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi there

    @theweav

    I think you are out of luck if you are still using Office XP (2002).

    You could either use the free WPS office -- much better than libre office and it is almost totally identical to the latest versions of Office and handles xlsx files with no problems or see if you can source cheap versions of Office 2007 and above.

    WPS Office - Free Office Download (Word, Spreadsheets,Presentation, PDF, Templates) for PC & Mobile, Alternative to MS Office

    Note though these free office suites don't include an email client so you'd have to use something else e.g Thunderbird (also free) .

    Cheers

    AIUI, you can open xlsx but not save. You can open docx and save docx. Not sure why the different behaviour for Excel cf Word. Martin

    I installed WPS and tried it. It saves the file as .xlsx, but when the file is opened, it opens as .xls Read Only, so it can't be edited and saved as an .xlsx file. While saving it shows File Conversion taking place, but still opens as .xls.

    Update: My bad, WPS does save .xls file as .xlsx.

    I would still like this to work in my Microdoft Excel. It works fine on my laptop using the same Excel software and Compatibility 2007 Pack

    You need to use a more modern version of Excel because the elder versions have security risks. Office 2010 onwards started to implement .xlsx. Compatibility Pack will not allow an elder version to use modern features. You can use Google Docs or LibreOffice.
