Excel and Access automatically launch on Windows 10 start

From about 3 days ago whenever I start Windows 10 several instances of Excel and Access are automatically launched. I have checked the Startup Apps and there are no Office apps in the list. How do I find what is causing these apps to launch?

Same here. I have no scheduled tasks etc or instructions for any to load on start up and I shut them all down before I switch off. I have noticed that the 365 office apps are NOT shutting themselves properly when closed. It’s not all the time but most of the time. Example is closing excel, then look in task manager under processes. You will see Microsoft excel still in the list! I think this is why on next boot it may auto start. This has a nasty side effect on outlook. If the process for say excel or word is still going (even tho it appears to be shut) then outlook will hang on on loading profile when opened. As soon as you kill the excel process in task manager then outlook will load fine. This is a nasty bug and I’m not sure when it began. Is a recent 365 update to blame or maybe windows 1903, I can’t be sure. All I know is it happens on both our computers and just typifies Microsoft’s lousy attitude to QA and how their relentless update policy is not welcome and causes many problems

I have 3 machines all running the same OS and Office:

    Windows 10 Home V1809 (Build 17763.557)
    Office 365 V1905 (16.0.11629.20238) 32bit version

I only get the problem on one machine. The other two behave normally.

It happens on both our home machines. One more often than the other though. And on both the outlook hanging on loading profile side effect. Also seen it at work. I looked on Microsoft answers forum and am seeing a bit of noise relating to this issue on there. So hopefully itíll get on Microsoftís radar!

if they didnít keep updating office every five minutes we might see less of these bugs. I do struggle to understand how they canít get their own software behaving correctly on their own operating system

I followed the advice on another thread and turned off the "use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up ….." option. This solved the problem on the machine on which the problem occurred. But it doesn't explain why the problem didn't occur on my other machines even though this option was turned on.

Go through for excellent explanations and applicable options for the methods that are of interest to you.

How to Shut Down the Computer in Windows 10
Shut Down Computer in Windows 10

    “New behavior:
    - When shutting down your PC, any open apps are "bookmarked" (for lack of a better word)
    - After reboot/restart, these apps will re-open automatically”

OPTION ONE To Shut down Computer from Start Menu
“If you have fast startup turned on, then this option will perform a hybrid shutdown instead of a full shutdown.”

OPTION EIGHT To Shut down Computer from Command Prompt
    “shutdown /s /f /t 0
Immediately force running apps to close, and then performs a full shutdown of the computer.”

I have shutdown & restart shortcuts that work for me.
--- You can do the same for the options that suit your need.

    Hi there

Anything in the start up services?

The easy way to get into that is to do ctrl-alt-del and choose task manager.
I'm not sure what the tasks are called but services in the start up section will be launched during or immediately after boot automatically.

    Cheers

The problem is not so much that sign in option. It's more to do with the fact that office programs like excel and word are not closing down properly. In my instance I'll close excel but if I go into task manager the microsoft excel still has a process. This has the nasty side effect of causing outlook to hang on 'loading profile' until the excel (or word) process in manally ended. So unticking that option may stop excel or word launching on login. But if you do use them and then close them and later in the same boot session go to open outlook then could run into the issue

    Hi there
I've got the entire Office 2019 pro suite including Visio and Project -- I don't seem to have any problems running all these office programs concurrently or just a few. When closing I don't seem to have any problems re-starting them or whatever so there's got to be something wrong with your system somewhere.

I'm running latest build of 1903 and latest office updates installed too. Apart from the rediculous change they made to make manually setting up email accounts in outlook almost impossible to do (there's an app in the control panel which gets you back to the old classical setup screens for outlook) Office just performs perfectly -- I'm quite a big user of EXCEL --use it a lot in stock trading etc -- I like to do a bit of "Day trading" from time to time.

    Cheers

The systems I have come across the problem with are all using office 365 click to run. I've seen quite a bit of stirring over the problem on MS answers forum and allied with the few posts on here it makes me think there was an issue in the latest office updates. I can circumvent by ensuring the processes for excel or word (or whatever office program last used) is manully ended when I finish using them but it's a bit lame. I had no idea this was going on in the background until I tried to open outlook for the first time in a week or two and stumbled into the hanging 'loading profile'. Took a bit of a process of elimination but I got there in the end.
