    Bonkersly confused - Update changed office 2016 to 2019

    Hi folks
    I am testing a a W7 X-64 ultimate system as a VM on host W10 19H1 system and after W7 updates I updated the version of Office 2016 I had on that VM via standard update -- it changed / updated to Office 2019 and also remained activated.

    Is this normal -- Bonkersly confused. !!! I'm not complaining but is this usual to get an automatic free update from Office 2016 to Office 2019.

    Cheers

    No, that's not usual.

    Are you sure you're not on 365? Mine gets updated monthly.

    Hi there

    definitely was Office 2016 -- the last time I updated that machine (the Windows 7 VM) was in 2017 until yesterday when I was testing another feature for someone who was having a problem with VMWare tools installation so that's an awful lot of subscriptions I would have noticed being taken from my Bank in that time !!!!! Certainly no subscriptions to Ms being taken from Bank or credit cards and on start up it definitely says EXCEL / Outlook 2019 or whatever part of the suite I'm using.

    Cheers

    It's should be just the icons that have changed, unless Microsoft is particularly annoyed with you , it should change the icons back when they send out an update to the OS to correct things - Office icons have never followed the normal rules for icon display

    Mine went this way and is partly corrected - Go Microsoft

    Hi there
    @Barman58 - nigel

    I think this is definitely Office 2019 on the W7 VM on Linux Host. Activated and current release too -- maybe a present for W7 users !!!!!!.

    I've only got Office / Macrium / IE11 /Edge and a SAPGUI (logon to corporate SAP systems) on this VM so no "tricky" or funny software on it. Just a fairly basic minimal system.

    Hi there
    @Edwin
    She's obviously a sensible woman. !!!

    It would be nice if this trick would work as well on W10.

    What I might do is use this VM to create a physical machine (this W7 Ultimate was an old TechNet / MSDN copy so zillions of activations allowed if required), upgrade to W10 via the standard "Free" --still working -- upgrade path and see if W10 retains the Office 2019.

    I don't use W7 very often -- only had it booted to help to fix another posters problem with VMWare tools -- but If I can get a free Office 2019 upgrade on W10 --I'm not complaining !!!

    This version of Office has Visio and Project too included and all activated.

    The funny thing is that Office 2019 isn't according to Ms supported on W7 but it all seems to be working OK -- so ????

    Anyway I upgraded the VM to W10 and it's all fine !!!!!!!! Office 2019 running loud and clear -- this is on 20H1 (from W7).
