Gave away my Office 2016 - can someone else use it?

I have been using Office already since the 90'ties.
After purchasing 365, I gave away my retail CD of Office 2016 to a friend of mine - I won't be using it anymore.
    Gave him my license key.

While I have been using an Outlook account, he always used Gmail.

To use Office 2016 it seems it is imperative for him to create an Outlook account(?), meaning to say that he can not use Office without an Outlook account.

If he were to create his own Outlook account and use that product, will there be no conflicts being that the product was licensed to me?

Any suggestions as to how to proceed?
Maybe it is impossible what I want?
I assumed that a product could be transferred to another user/PC as long as it is in use on 1 pc only.

    Thanks.

    Hi there
These licenses aren't normally transferable -- also you would --even if it were possible have to prove to Ms that you either never used the software or you've totally uninstalled it.

I'd phone the Ms licensing / activation help desks -- they could ensure what to do -- they won't mind so long as a subscription is paid but you will have to call.

    Hi Jimbo

    Thanks.
In this case it involves a single user Office 2016 retail license (CD, FPP) , i.e. not a subscription.

    Later...
    I found following : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/micr...-transferable/

    where it says
    "
You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement before the transfer. Any time you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer and you may not retain any copies.
    "

So, basically, my friend should be able to use the software.

    Hi there @tfwul
You only need an outlook account if you use outlook (the email client) in any version of office -- if you aren't using an e-mail client such as outlook then you don't need one. However any e-mail client e.g thunderbird etc requires at least 1 account to be set up.

Now if you are talking about Office/365 then you will need to have or create a Microsoft account --that's a different issue to an Outlook account - it's a separate entity although it will require an e-mail address to set it up !!!

    Cheers

    Hi jimbo45
My friend indicated that he would be using Excel and Word only as he is used to using Gmail (web access) for many years.
    It is unbelievable but true.

In order to use/install Office 2016 it seems he -first- needs to register the product using the provided product key whilst his Microsoft account, which he has been using for the last time some 5 years ago.

AFAIK upto Office 2013 one could activate Office without account, selecting an option which was something like 'Enter product key instead"

Anyway, many thanks for your feedback.
