Move items i delete in inbox to deleted folder

I have just noted while deleting items in the Inbox that sometimes I am asked whether to delete permanently, mostly I am not. In the past items I deleted went into the Deleted folder so in the event of deleting something in error, I could retrieve it.
Today I accidentally deleted an email and it did not go into the Deleted folder - it has just been permanently deleted.
    What has changed?
On a related issue, having lost this email I tried Folder - Recover Deleted Items but this option is greyed out.
    Are these Outlook improvements!!

    Hi there
Check settings not changed --usually Outlook (even 2019) sends deleted mail to deleted items folder from where you can then delete it.

If you can't find the advanced settings use the outlook applet in the control panel (these days it's called outlook 2016 whatever version of office you have --- office >=2016).

    Thanks for the reply Jimbo.

I had looked there (if "there" is where you meant - File - Options - Advanced).
I checked the Auto Archive functions and they are off. Empty deleted folder on exit also off.
In the Other section at the bottom, the option to Prompt for confirmation before permanently deleting is set on.

Can't see or think of where else I can look.

Another thing I just noted is that if I delete a message I have opened it simply goes. If I delete a message without opening, then the Deleted folder counter increases by 1 then promptly decreases by 1 to the original number! Autoarchive on the Deleted folder properties is off.

    Hi there

    @Sigurd
Try re-installing (save mail first though if you need it)

It works for me on both outlook 2010 and Outlook 2019 -- mind you I have email set to IMAP not POP3 -- if using POP3 (long time since I used that) you probably need to ensure Mail kept on the server until deleted otherwise POP3 mail is moved to your local device off the server. Might be different now -- POP3 really shouldn't be used these days any more.

If switching to IMAP save / archive your email as you'll have to re-create the accounts - then import address books / messages etc --- you won't be able to "do it the quick way" via exporting and importing the profiles using the registry method as that will still keep the POP3 method if you used POP3.

    Cheers

Thanks Jimbo. Not sure if I fancy doing that! Last time I did a complete re-install of everything (I do it every 3 - 4 years), despite ensuring I had backed up everything I still lost a batch of emails. Managed to retrieve most using software I tracked down on the internet but it cost a few pounds!!
If I can pluck up the courage I'll do as you suggest. Thanks for the help.
