Pinned excel/word start menu shortcuts not working

I have used the method described here https://www.thewindowsclub.com/pin-f...enu-windows-10 to add shortcuts to office docs to the start menu/tiles. The shortcuts appear immediately (no restart required) but they only open the program and not the actual document. Eg. Excel or Word will open blank but the document does not open.

When I open the pinned shortcuts folder "C:\Users\......\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", the shortcuts work correctly from there though.

I have tried using the "Pin to Start" from the context menu with the actual document itself, and also with a shortcut file (create a shortcut first, then pin this shortcut to start).

Restart makes no difference either (as was suggested on WindowsClub page above).

So frustrating! Just upgraded from Windows 7 and was hoping this would be an easier process on Windows 10

Hi Coro123, and welcome to Tenforums!

In Windows 10, I found the most practical way to quick access certain documents is via context menu.

Quickest is if you pin Word (not a document) to Taskbar, and by right click on it you have a list of documents. You can pin any document in list - it will appear on the top and stay there.

It is the same for Start menu. Right click on Word tile it will give you context menu with recent files

About Pin to start in contect menu, here are tutorials by Brink. You can ask him there too

    Hi Andre,
Thanks for that. I will use that method if I can't get my preferred option to work. (I like to only pin shortcuts to the taskbar that I use every day).

I see that what I am trying to do has worked for others, so am hoping there is a trick to fix it. Not to mention has worked well for me on Windows 7 for the last 10 years - albeit after a slightly cumbersome process to make it work in the first place!

Thanks again... I see there are 3 more registry entries in Brink's than the WindowsClub I posted above.
    Unfortunately no change though.

I thought I would test with a PDF file and this works fine, so it is a problem with office docs.

I also compared the properties of the shortcut that is created from the "Pin to Start" context menu with a shortcut created by default context item "Create shortcut". All tabs of shortcut properties look exactly the same!

What version of Windows do you have? Also post Office version.

So in short... document's shortcut is working fine (is it?), but not when pinned to Start.

    Windows 10 Pro
    Office 2007

    Correct...
If I use the hacked reg context menu to create a pinned item, it doesn't work.
However, if I open the folder "C:\Users\......\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" and click on the new shortcut there, it does work!

I would start with repairing office installation (Control panel / Programs and features /find Office and click on repair

Also, never hurts to check Windows (open command prompt - as admin, and type "sfc /scannow")

    Hello Coro 123,
I have exactly the same problem. I tried everything that was mentioned above, but I did not solve the problem. Did you solve the problem? Any new ideas for this?

You need to create the shortcuts to each document and place them in the user folder manually...
only then will the shortcuts retain the proper path...
