Import recovered OST into Outlook 2010?

I manually mined the files from my crashed laptop before I reinstalled Windows 10 and Office 2010.

I lost all my contacts - it is an Outlook.com account but the contacts were not synched with the web version.

I believe I got the correct OST file from the savage operation.

Is there anyway I can import that into my current Outlook (ideally without scrapping the emails I sent and received in the past two weeks since I reimaged the pc)?

    Thanks!

Did you come across a PST file. It maybe down the hidden Appdata path. Your contacts are likely within it.

    check
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

Were you keeping emails in personal files on your computer? Again these will be in that PST file.

Thanks. It is my understanding that you do not get a PST file unless you are on an exchange server or something similar. People who are using webmail through Outlook only get an OST file.

This was never explained to me when I set up my home email, once I changed to Verizon, which does not offer email services.

And I have seen queries on generic query sites answered with "You cannot transfer OST files from one PC to another." But there is nothing to suggest such answerers actually know what they are talking about.

If you are using Outlook anything you can have Personal email folders and a personal Address book. Hence PST (Personal)

This is stuff stored on your device.

You said your contacts were not syncing so I'm thinking you were using a personal Address book.

Verizon bought AOL and Yahoo and have created Oath for email.

Usually OST files are really just temporary. They mirror the server and are rebuilt from the server should they be deleted. I think they were created so you could work with your mail offline, like on a flight, and then sync back up.

If your drive from old box is functioning search down your user path for *.pst

Thanks. Sigh. I do see there is outlook.pst on the computer now.

But no .pst existed on the computer after the crash. At least no searches for *.pst found anything, searching as administrator, with hidden files turned on.

And more than one site said there are no PST files if there is no pop3 server involved.

For sure Pop uses PST as you are moving your mail to your device. But even with the new stuff you can create PST's to store locally.

    Strange no PST.

Check the path I gave you manually.

You also would have had the ability to move it, I did, so mine is in my documents and is processed by my backups.

If there was no PST there is one other location "This computer only" at least in Outlook 2013. I must see where that data is kept.

Thanks but I cannot. I reinstalled Windows 10 two weeks ago. Just now really missing those Contacts and was going to try to get them back.

Also, I mispoke. There was a pst file, but they are from my old Time Warner email, from years ago, because that was a POP3 server. So it exists in old backups.

Webmail does not work the same way, there is no POP3 or Exchange server involved.

And since the info I was reading on the web said there would be no .pst file as a result of there being no server involved, I gave up and reinstalled Windows.

So I explored the "This computer only" option and mine appears to be directing to one of my accounts OST files.

This could be how yours was handling.

So that lead me to looking into OST to PST conversion tools, this seems to be the way most sites were talking about moving OST.

Lets see if another member has had real time experience with transferring OST's.

I will explorer the OST conversion options further.

Saw them from $49 to $99. Not 100% sure your OST has this data.

    Came across this viewer.

How many contacts did you have?

For sure use outlook.com as exchange and ensure your new contacts are syncing across devices.

    Fingers crossed.
