    Yep, My Visual Studio keys are Retail keys. I install locally and just activate with the key, no subscription.
    Hi there

    @alphanumeric

    I think the operative word here is STILL !!

    There's no doubt that the intention is for Ms to go fully subscription --I believe even on the internal Ms blog chatter sites there's a lot of noise about saying there *might* just be one final stand alone office product (non subscription).

    Personally with the almost impossibility of setting up Outlook email accounts any more on these new versions I'm just sticking with my version of Office 2010 until it just won't run any more on Windows - and even in that case I can keep it running on a VM until I don't need computers any more.

    I'm afraid even alternative email clients like Thunderbird are hosing up setting up email accounts properly -- what's this fad for giving those rediculous menus where if you aren't on some silly thing like gmail or outlook.com it's almost impossible to set these up any more. There's a backdoor way for office 2019 via control panel but who knows how long control panel will be around for. Also if you use the click2run method of installing office some of the languages won't install if you want to add multiple languages.

    Ms should take a leaf out of Adobe's book -- load and loads of people stuck with last non subscription versions of Photoshop before it went subscription (still works perfectly well -- for new cameras you can use cameras software to convert RAW files to psd, use PS to process and then save back as RAW if you wish), or switched to cheaper things like PS elements (probably sufficient for most people) or alternatives like THE GIMP (totally free) which is improving by leaps and bounds each release.

    Cheers
    jimbo

    It's wierd. I have two sets of keys for Office 2016 Profession Plus and Office 2019 Professional Plus. Both marked as Retail. One set is used with the ISO download to install locally. The other set of keys will only work with a web install. The second set of keys for Office 2019 Profession Plus are in the Office 365 section, but its not subscription? Near as I can tell anyway. It activates just like the other install. The only difference is if I use one of those product keys they get tied to my Microsoft Account. If I need to reinstall latter on it will let me select one of those keys to activate it without having to type it in. Then it marks that key as in use for one license on X Device. Something like that, I'd have to have a look see for the actual wording. So far I've only done the one web install. I haven't noticed any difference between it and the local install. I haven't used it all that much to be honest though. It's my laptop and I don't use it much this time of year.

    Then I found out how to install the still legal and free Office 2010 Starter on W10!!!
    Starter 2010 was only legally sold to by MS and offered to OEM's only for distribution on a new OEM computer. What you found was a workaround and not truly allowed by the EULA.

    I guess you're right! I deleted/edited my previous post(s).

    My H&S 2019 is legit, so we're all good!

    My apologies for my ignorance.

    It is sad to say that many users don't know or don't care about legalities or EULA's. There are many ways to "get around" anything. The old saying applies, "Just because you can does not mean you should"

    Following the EULA is all well and good, provided you can actually understand it?

    I do find it sad when people conflate the two. "It is illegal because the EULA says..." etc
