365 Is it possible to create an IMAP account next to the same POP3

    Office 365
Currently installed on desktop and using POP3. I have been using POP3 since Office 97.
    Recently changed to 365.
It is installed on my desktop. Not yet on my laptop.
    It is still using POP3/PST.

Sofar I have been very, I mean very, reluctant to switching IMAP (just do a Google search on : IMAP problems)
I intend to switch to IMAP and OST, because I want to synchronize my laptop with my desktop.
Have already applied the registry change changing OST path (ForceOSTPath) on both desktop and laptop.

Just want to make sure, before proceeding and maybe get conflicts:
can I create a new Outlook profile (IMAP based) next to the POP3 one with the same name?

    Like this..

I use IMAP on all my PCs, iPad & Android phone to sync all mail accounts without problems.

Creating a new Outlook profile is a good idea then you can always go back to POP3 if you prefer.

    Hi there

    @tfwul

Not sure what the value of using POP3 any more is - especially if you have more than 1 device (including phones / tablets) where you might want access to your email.

However the answer to your question is you can have multiple accounts intermixed with POP3 and IMAP with all these versions of OUTLOOK but you can't have both an IMAP and a POP3 account for the same email account.

managing that also would be problematic as you'd have different emails on the servers / local computers and you'd also have access problems when using other devices.

BTW you might need to go into control panel to set up the accounts if you don't have email addresses that the Ms database recognizes -- the latest updates to outlook 2016/2019/365 make setting up any sort of manual config almost impossible --the applet in the control panel though brings back the older fully configurable outlook screens.

    Cheers

Thank you Steve, thank you Jimbo45! @jimbo45
I have always been using a standalone version of Office. There was no need for IMAP and POP3 worked flawlessly.
One can store the POP3 .pst on an encrypted drive, which is, by default, not possible with IMAP. It is just an ease of mind to have all personal data on an encrypted drive (that is why they are there for).

As I intend to switch one of these days, I just wanted to make sure they both .OST and .PST can 'live together', so to say.

    Thanks again.

Regarding any Microsoft email addresses (hotmail.com, outlook.com, live.com, msn.com), you can (and should!) completely forget POP3 and IMAP. All MS email services use by default Messaging API (MAPI), usually called Exchange ActiveSync or Microsoft Exchange.

Exchange is like IMAP on steroids. An Exchange email is always synced with email server and any device you use. Archive your current POP3 mailbox, then delete the outlook.com email address from Outlook application and set the account up again:

It will be automatically set up as an Exchange account.

Please notice that if you have enabled two-factor authentication for any Microsoft email address and setup them as Exchange accounts, you must setup them in Outlook application using app password instead of your normal MS account password. Sign in to your MS account and create app password before adding it to Outlook.

    Thank you Kari.
Also thanks for sharing the screenshots.

However - and please... don't me wrong, okay?
Based on what I have read about good old POP vs IMAP and Exchange, I believe that latter is mainly been used in a business environment.
In my case, it is just 1 person, with 2 devices, no big deal

Microsoft email addresses by default use Exchange when setup in Outlook desktop application, regardless if the accounts are Azure AD / business or enterprise email addresses, or personal Hotmail / Outlook / Live / MSN email addresses.

See the first of the screenshots I posted. As you can see, I have four email addresses setup in Outlook application. Two first ones are Azure AD accounts, but the two last ones are just normal, personal Microsoft accounts with an outlook.com address. Yet, all four accounts are setup as Exchange accounts.

Really, with any Microsoft based email address, there's absolutely no valid reason to use any other email protocol and account type than Exchange. POP3 and IMAP protocols belong to a bygone era. You should forget setting your Microsoft based email addresses manually as POP3 or IMAP, and instead always use automatic setup and Exchange protocol.

Going back to your original question, having the same email address setup in the same version of Outlook is bound to cause you issues.

I'm with Kari on letting it setup automatically in Outlook using Exchange. I've had absolutely no issues with the exchange set up. I also use automated setup on my iPhone. Calendar, contacts and mail all stay sync'ed

    Exactly.

Everything is always synced, regardless if I use one of my PCs or mobile devices, or a browser on a public computer at an Internet café or my friends PC.

I have my main Outlook.com aggregator address mirrored to two separate Gmail addresses, one IMAP the other POP3.
So that I have a fully redundant POP3 backup on a different mail system. Turn off any 'sync' options so it doesn't delete anything from the mirror and it is effectively an archive. Just watch out for inbox data limits.
Desktop has W10 Mail app, Gmail app and webmail access. Likewise Android phone.
Dead easy to set up from the webmail options and works flawlessly (so far...).

Do a similar thing with calendars too, via subscriptions.

And IFTTT/Flow manual triggers for Dropbox et al to A N other cloud storage automations (but with the automation switched off to avoid the ransomware issue).
